How to be lucky

Peoplefrom around the world wish for good luck.

In China, it is believed that good fortune (运气) enters your life through your front door. Just before the New Year, Chinese people clean their homes to say goodbye to the past. But to avoid sweeping all that good luck out, the dust is swept inward (朝内地). Then it has to be carried out through the back door, not the front door.

According to Serbian (塞尔维亚的) folk stories, spilling water behind someone is a great way to give him or her good luck. Serbians spill water behind friends and family members before they go for a test, an interview or a trip.

In Ireland, brides wear small bells on their wedding dresses or jewelry (珠宝) or put bells in their bouquets (花束). The bells are a symbol of good luck. People think the ringing of the bells keeps evil spirits away.

On New Year’s Eve, the Spanish eat 12 green grapes for 12 months of good luck. They eat one grape at each bell toll (钟声) by swallowing(吞咽) it quickly.
