China Timeline Project

As we complete chapter 7, you will be creating a timeline that shows the major developments of China from the years 589 to 1644. This project will count as your test for chapter 7 and will be worth 60 points.

  1. Figure out how many years the Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties each lasted. Use the timeline on page 162 or your dynasties sheet to help you.
  1. Decide the format of the timeline you want to use. The format should be clear and the spatial relationship between the events must be easy for the reader (Rieder)!!! to understand. How big do you want your timeline to be? How much space will you need to show all the events clearly? You may want to be creative and make the timeline in the shape of an animal or symbol significant to Chinese culture. Add creative touches to the border or throughout the timeline that indicate what you have learned about important symbols, characters, cultural aspects of the Chinese culture. DO NOT do a power point, DO NOT roll up the final draft like a scroll.
  1. Leave enough space on the timeline to include achievements such as religious developments (Buddhism, Confucianism); arts, inventions, building projects, governments, and important people. (You must decide THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS FOR EACH DYNASTY to show on your timeline.) You will need to pick AT LEAST 3 achievements, ideas or people from each dynasty.
  1. After reading lessons 1-4 in chapter 7 and completing the dynasties sheet, start drafting the timeline. You might want to make a CHRONOLOGICAL list of all the events etc, you want to include on the timeline and then decide how to divide up the space on your timeline. You may want to research specific dates. Most importantly, decide if the format you have in mind is going to work to show the events clearly.
  1. PLAN AHEAD!!! Give yourself plenty of time to create the timeline. Start in pencil and when you are satisfied add the “creative touches.” Remember the final draft should look like a FINAL DRAFT. There should be no pencil, only sharpie or colored pencil or pens.
  1. LOOK AT THE RUBRIC before you begin and as you work on the project to understand how it will be evaluated. Don’t leave anything out.

When in doubt: CONSULT THE RUBRIC
