Willy Wonka, Jr

Words & Music by
Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley
Adapted for the Stage by
Leslie Bricusse & Timothy A. McDonald
Based on the book
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
By Roald Dahl

Dear Educator,

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! There’s only one thing better than chocolate and that’s Children’s Theatre of Elgin’s presentation of Willy Wonka, Jr!

For many years, Roald Dahl’s story of Willy Wonka has delighted children and adults. Dahl’s first draft of this story was in 1961. He wrote several drafts before he decided on the one that has now become so well known.

Pre-Show Discussion

What is a fantasy? What is a fantasy play or story? Can you name some fantasy plays or stories? (The Wizard of Oz, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, Where the Wild Things Are, The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, Redwall series, Mary Poppins, fairy tales)

If you found some money in the street, what would you do? Do you know any greedy people? How do they act toward others? How do they make you feel?

Is it important to keep a good attitude regardless of the situation? To think positive during hard times is very difficult. Is it possible to be positive when your world is falling apart around you? Is it possible to be extremely poor and hungry and still have a positive attitude?

Post Show Discussion and Activities

We believe that students can learn in many different ways and theater can be one of those avenues. You will find Bloom’s Taxonomy – Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation question are used in this guide. You can pick and choose as many or as few as you see fit to enhance your students thinking and learning.

We hope you enjoy the show.
