Award Info:Drs. Marlene and Bob Hartzman know the reality of spending years devoted to furthering their education while balancing costs of living. At Bob's graduation from medical school at UW-Madison, he received a student research award which gave him the opportunity to enter postgraduate medical training debt free and go on to make considerable contributions to the fields of medicine and science. "These UW programs, most of all the Center for Patient Partnerships, create life changing opportunities that profoundly affect the individual and the wider community," says Bob Hartzman. Now the Hartzmans provide an opportunity like the one Bob received for students who are passionate about advocating for patients and reforming health care. "Bob and I are committed to the mission of the Center for Patient Partnerships," says Marlene Hartzman. "We choose to give funds for student stipends to impact medical and legal education, and ultimately improve health care."Selected applicants will be awarded $1,000 for participation in the Consumer Health Advocacy Certificateat the Center for Patient Partnerships. Five hundred dollars will be presented to recipients at the completion of the Introduction to Patient Advocacy course; and the second $500 will be presented to recipients upon completion of theApplied Advocacy Experience course. Up to five awards are available.

Requirements:Award honoreesmust enroll in the first course of the Certificateat the Center for Patient Partnerships and have an interest in gaining skills for future leadership in health care. Eligibility for an award requires that the applicant be:

  • Enrolled in the Capstone Certificate for credits
  • A future healthcare or public health professional
  • Actively applying or have been accepted into a health science, public health, or health administration program

This application must be submittedeither with or after your application for the Consumer Health Advocacy Certificate at the Center for Patient Partnerships has been submitted. Due date is the same as the Certificate application deadline.

Note:Each recipient of a HartzmanAward will be required to prepare, upon receipt of the award and after the recipient’s program is concluded, a letter to the donorswho made this program possible. These letters should provide a summary of the recipient’s experience at the Center for Patient Partnerships, and how the award made the experience possible. Additional details will be provided to recipients regarding this requirement.
