Damien Williams, YPCN

Chris Sargent, Youth Beat (Mission Australia)

  • Seconded to provide support to Sorell region as a result of the recent fires. On 14 February Youth Beat attended “Youth House,” an event for young people at the Tasman Community Centre, Nubeena. Scope to link in with other services in Dunalley, Tasman and Sorell, and provide support for the duration of 2013.Not surprisingly, some of the concerns of local community members is that short-term services will leave the region after the initial recovery phase.
  • Working with Stacey Milbourne (Communities for Children), to provide one-off Youth Beat events in Oatlands, Campania and Triabunna.
  • Recently attended Vinnies Youth barbecue at Bridgewater Nursery, driven by Sarah Davidson from St Vincent de Paul. The idea of this project is for college students from Private schools based in Hobart to host monthly barbecues at the Bridgewater Nursery. The scope is to break down stereotypes and develop mentoring roles, as well as developing two-way relationships for both local and non-local participants.
  • Attended Good Beginnings event at Tottenham Park, 30 January.
  • Recently started a partnership with Rotary to host monthly barbecues in the Rokeby area. Youth Beat is interested in starting up again the Bridgewater community barbecues in 2013. Scope to host monthly barbecues with co-located service visits. Idea for barbecues to be well publicised and to have ‘targeted’ themes (i.e. awareness around sexual health would have a co-located sexual health educator).
