Chief Mates HND Blended Learning at South Tyneside College

Use of this qualification: Besides an academic qualification at SCQF 8 HN Level, it forms part of the requirements to obtain Chief Mate' CoC
Description: For chief mate's CoC, a candidate who has the required amount sea time must complete and pass HND NSc., MCA External Exams in Navigation and Stability, Short Courses such as NAEST M, Medical Care aboard Ship, HELM M, and MCA Oral Examination. This course covers only the HND NSc. All other requirements are outside the remit of this course. The college has established policies in place with regard to assessment and appeal procedures; these are available on college intranet for all students.
Intended for: Deck Officers who hold a valid OOW Certificate of Competency from an administration which is recognised by UK MCA and want to achieve Chief Mate CoC, but unable to attend college to complete this award.
Duration: candidates are allowed 2 years to complete the award. A candidate working at average pace is expected to complete 10 assessments in the first year
Assessments: All assessments must be completed in the college. Assignments shall be submitted on-line through college's plagiarism detection software called “Turn It In”.
Holidays: 2014-15: 1st Aug to 1st Sept 2014, 23rd Dec 2014 – 5th Jan 2015, 3rd Apr – 7th Apr 2015 and all other UK Bank holidays. Month of August is summer holidays for college every year and most of the staff will be on holidays during this month.
Terms and conditions:
1. Fee paid will not be refunded under any circumstances
2. Assessments must be taken only when the candidate is fully ready for it.
3. If a candidate fails to achieve a minimum pass mark for an assessment, there will be one free re-sit opportunity when the candidate is ready. Further re-sit will be at the discretion of the college and will be subject to a fee of £40 per assessment.
4. Students on this program will be part of a forum where they can contribute to discussions or post questions relating to topic area.
5. Assessment sessions in the college will be available 6 times a year in Nov, Feb, March, May, June and July.
6. Two weeks’ notice must be given to college to arrange assessments.
7. Result of the assessments will be posted within 3 weeks, on the pro-portal which is college achievement recording system which can be accessed by the students when they log on to the system.
