1. CW GARDENING CLUB
Hello again folks,

Here we are at the start of Autumn.
It will be nice to see the colours as the trees and shrubs take on their new hues and shades prior to their fall. If any do land on your lawn, be sure to rake off, put in a black bin liner, and allow to overwinter. The resulting compost can be spread over your borders in Spring.
Our speaker for the next meeting which is on October 26th will be Mr Tim Hudson. His topic is "Rhododendrons and hidden valleys".

Quite an intriguing title don't you think?

Don't forget the single bloom for the competition.
That's all for now folks. If more info is required, ring me on 01522 750349.

2. CHERRY WILLINGHAM LADIES GROUP
Next Meeting: 7.30pm, October 5th in the Church Hall.
Our Speaker is Marion.
The topic is: ‘Stained Glass’
Items can be purchased, also ‘Bring and Buy’.
Membership is due: £5 per year (over 80’s £4).
Refreshments: £1 per evening for members, (non-member £2 per meeting).
New members always welcome!

3. CHERRY WILLINGHAM WI

After July’s visit by our New Zealand friends, in August we concentrated on WI matters. Maureen Bunnage of Skellingthorpe spoke about her role as one of the Trustees of Lincolnshire North. Ann Lendrum then told us of her work as a WI Advisor. Both were most interesting, as the strength of the WI movement lies in its good organization.

This was followed by a group discussion of changes which could improve our own WI in the future. Gene Dainty provided flowers for the table, teas were served by Christine Dawson and Norma Shaw, and Christine Wheaton gave the Vote of thanks to our guests. They then judged the competition, “My most memorable WI moment, in not more than 50 words.” Anne Driver came first, closely followed by Val Wright.

We must be heading in the right direction, for our September meeting was packed out, with four more prospective members joining us. Angela Tubb spoke about “Colours of Bangladesh”. She had brought a selection of colourful saris, which Lesley Joy and Jane Jordan acted as much admired models. Angela told us of her life in that very different country, and of the handicrafts which are produced there. She was warmly thanked by Sylvia Beardmore. She then judged the competition, “An Asian Accessory”. Christine Dawson provided flowers for the table, Janet King and Stephanie McHugh served refreshments.

Members were reminded that our next meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 12th October will be a Flower Arranging Demonstration by the award winning Robin Leake. This will be followed by a Harvest Auction. By then a coach load of members will have visited Denby Potteries on 5th October. Ring Hazel Cropley 751992 for details if you have not already booked.

4. News & Messages from Your Parish Council

Village Improvement Working Party

During the last meeting of the Parish council, it was decided to restructure and expand the working party for Highways and Byways. Hence forward it will be known as the Village Improvement Working Party.

It is intended that the village will be divided up into four zones, with at least one designated councillor responsible for each zone. The councillors will still be responsible for attending to the inspection and reporting of matters connected with the upkeep and maintenance of the roads, footpaths and byways of the village in their zones as before. There will be a meeting, as there has been in the past, with a representative of Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department every two months, when matters concerning the roads, footpaths and byways will be reported on and discussed. In addition, the working party will also ensure that other problem areas requiring attention will be attended to and put right: for example, trees or hedges overhanging footways and causing obstruction, broken or damaged street furniture, broken or damaged road signs, litter or fly tipping and grass cutting around the village.

The work is intended to ensure that the public areas of the village remain well cared for, with the effect of smartening up Cherry Willingham as a whole. Five Councillors have been designated for this working party.

If any resident wishes to bring up a matter for investigation, please e-mail, phone, or write to the Parish Clerk, quoting A matter for the Village Improvement Working Party.

Emergency Planning

A special thank you to the resident who responded to our request last month for a volunteer Flood Warden and also to those who offered to join our informal “emergency task force”. We are still looking for more volunteers who would be willing to offer assistance in an emergency to vulnerable residents, for example, by shopping for them or simply ensuring that they are OK. Could you be one of these volunteers? For more information, or to volunteer, please contact the Parish Clerk (see below).

Other Matters

Ø  Grants to Village Organisations: Through the precept we have a pot of £1,000 for 2011/12 to be accessed by voluntary groups serving the village. You will have to demonstrate that your request will benefit local residents. The maximum sum per grant will normally be £100. Further information from the Parish Clerk.

Ø  Meetings of the Council: At the Millennium Hall at 7.30 p.m. on 17th October and 21st November. You can raise issues at the commencement of these meetings but the Members cannot enter into discussion with you at this point. You cannot speak once the formal business is under way, although you are welcome to stay. It is helpful if questions to be raised are notified in advance of the meeting to the Parish Clerk so that a response can be prepared. (Note: Residents often find the quickest way to deal with matters of concern is by contacting the Clerk, rather than waiting for a meeting.)

Ø  Contacting us: Cathy Ruston, our Parish Clerk, works part-time but can be contacted as follows: by phone on 01522 753398 (answerphone available), by letter to the Millennium Hall, in person at the Hall between 1.30 & 2.30 p.m. on Tuesdays or 10 to 11 a.m. on Fridays (subject to operational requirements) or by e-mail to Cathy at .

9. CHERRY WILLINGHAM FC.
We are now into a new season starting with a 2-2 draw with our first game against Wild Life Athletic. Gary Jenkinson is again Team Manager who has put a very young squad of players together, with 15 of the players under 20yrs old. The other six players range from 30 to 40 years so you can see the age group where players are missing. There are only six players from outside the village area which shows how we cater for the village.

Hopefully we look forward to another good season following on the success of last season where we reached four cup finals and won two of them.
We would like to have continued with a Sunday team but there was not enough player support.
Thanks to West Lindsey District Council and the Parish Council we now have new goals and nets which gives a much better appearance on the playing field.
Elected at the Annual General Meeting were as follows:
President: Bert Wilkinson / Vice Presidents: Steve Fisher, John Sharp, Tony Plover.
Lifer Member: Ken Jackson
Chairman: Martin Brammer / Vice Chairman: Dave Barker
Secretary / Treasurer: Eric Brocklesby. Committee: Paul Welburn / Adi Walker.
Team Manager: Gary Jenkinson / Assistant: Eric Brocklesby.
Headquarters: Cherry Tree Pub.
We would appreciate anyone who could help the club by sponsoring a match ball or in any other way during the season.

10. EDITOR’S NOTES

1.  Please don’t forget the newspaper collections by the Scouts and Guides group, every 3rd Saturday in the month. Put them out on the front where they can be seen. This collection helps to raise much needed income to support their activities. Even nicer if you can tie up the bundles with string and make sure they don’t get wet. - Thanks

2.  Remember that the Newsletter advertisers pay fees that go a long way to paying for this service to the village without having to use too much of our parish precept so please use their services if appropriate to reward them for their patronage.

3.  I draw your attention especially to a function being run for the Scout and Guiding Group, that wonderful group that help to set the good character of our children. The function will be to specifically raise the sum of £1000 to pay for the Scout / Guide Headquarters hut to be painted in anti-graffiti paint (and a pot of luminous green to paint the culprits if we find them). How sad it is to think that this effort is to make up for mindless individuals in our midst. I encourage you to support the Autumn Fundraising Fair on 22nd October. I also encourage anyone who knows the culprits of the graffiti to let CWPC know so action may be taken. These are the very people that should go to Scouts or Guides to build their characters for proper social behavior.

12. THANK YOU

A Belated Thank You (from Karen Stevenett) - originally sent to Editor in June but with incorrect email address so lost)
Mum (Beryl) wrote this when she came out of hospital and asked for it to be placed in the Cherry News:
“We would like to thank all friends and neighbours for their help and kindness to Karen while I was in hospital and thank you for the flowers, gifts and lovely cards I received. Thank you from us both.
