Unit 5 test review: solutions and compound composition

Learning objectives: Students will be able to

  • calculate percent composition of compounds using the compound formula and a periodic table, and also by using experimental data.
  • determine the empirical formula of compounds starting from percent composition or experimental data.
  • STILL know the names and formulas of the common polyatomic ions and be able to use them to write names and formulas of ionic compounds.
  • describe the dissolving process at the macroscopic level, (including temperature change, conductivity, and visual appearance) and understand how to tell the difference between a solution and a suspension (or heterogeneous mixture).
  • describe the dissolving process at the submicroscopic level using words, symbols and diagrams, including the roles of entropy and potential energy and the concept of dynamic equilibrium, and tie these descriptions to macroscopic observations.
  • calculate molarity of a solution, and to use molarity as a conversion factor between moles of solute and volume of solution.
  • apply and use the dilution formula when necessary

Recommended review strategies:

Review your quiz and make sure you understand any mistakes you made.

Write paragraphs and/or make concept maps showing how the above vocabulary terms are related to each other, using the "learning objectives" above as a guideline for your explanations.

Use the online simulation on dissolving salts to practice explaining what occurs during this process, including submicroscopic and macroscopic observations.

Make up test-like questions and trade questions with a friend.

Re-read and summarize in writing any textbook pages that you didn't fully understand the first time you read them.

Examine important diagrams/graphs in powerpoint, and write out explanations of their meaning and importance.

Practice naming compounds, doing mole to solution volume conversion problems, percent composition calculations, and empirical formula calculations using the worksheet on the course site and checking with the key
