2017-2018

Welcome to the fascinating world of atoms, reactions, solutions, elements, and matter! In this course, you will learn advanced areas of chemistry and how they apply to everyday life. Each lecture, lab, and assignment is designed to enable you to learn beyond just CHEM 1I. It is my personal goal to bring science to life in a way that you as a student can comprehend, retain, and enjoy.

TOPICS OF STUDY:

Solids and Liquids

Water

Solutions

Thermodynamics and Kinetics

Chemical Equilibrium

Acids, Bases, and Salts

Oxidation Reduction

Organic Chemistry

Biochemistry

Nuclear Chemistry

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS AND PROCEDURES:

In order to provide an optimal learning environment, students are expected to follow classroom rules and procedures.

The following guidelines will help you reach this goal:

  1. BE ON TIME, ON TASK, AND PREAPARED EVERY DAY FOR CLASS
  1. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS

When completing an assignment or lab follow the instructions given by the teacher.

  1. BE RESPECTFUL

Be respectful of others in your environment. This includes working quietly (when instructed) and not disturbing others, being kind in words and actions, respecting school and personal property.

  1. NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN CLASS
  1. NO CELLPHONES

ASSIGNMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES:

Assignments are due at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated. All assignments should be done using pencil or blue/black pen. All assignments will need to be identified by your name (first and last), hour, date, and title of assignment. Assignments missing the full heading may be subject to a 10% deduction of grade. It is a student’s responsibility to claim a NO NAME paper, which should be evident if it was submitted and I recorded a grade of zero/missing.

LATE WORK POLICIY:

No late work is accepted. Assignments must be turned in on the day they are due.

QUZZIES:

Pop quizzes will be given in class as a chance for extra credit and/or a daily grade. These quizzes will only contain information covered in class lectures, readings, or labs.

GRADESCALE:

100-90% = A

89-80% = B

79-70% = C

69-60% = D

59 below = F

REQUIREMENTS FOR LAB CLASSES:

You will receive lab safety rules over which you will test; you are responsible for knowing these rules. You will not be allowed to participate in lab until you pass a lab safety exam (scoring 80% or higher). You should follow in order all teacher directions and perform no unauthorized procedures. No horseplay or practical jokes during class labs are accepted.

During lab classes students should:

Wear appropriate lab clothing and safety equipment (e.g. goggles, aprons) during lab exercises. Labs will be announced in advance, so that you should be prepared. If you are not prepared for the lab, you will not participate and will receive a zero for this class period. Remember labs count as part of your overall grade and are non-optional.

ACADEMIC HONOR CODE:

Students are expected to do their own work. Students who cheat on any work in class will be referred to the office, given a zero on the assignment and parents will be notified. When turning in labs, students can work together to perform the experiment and collect data in class, but are expected to put the entire laboratory report individually in their own words.

DISIPLINE POLICY:

  1. 1 Verbal Warning
  2. 2 Detentions
  3. Call to Parent
  4. Principal’s Office
