Chemistry I and Chemistry Honors Syllabus

Required materials for class:

  • A 1 -1 ½ inch three ring binder for this class only
  • 5 section dividers
  • Loose leaf college ruled paper placed in binder
  • Calculator ( does not have to be scientific)
  • Science Fee $ 10.00
  • Clorox Wipes 1 package

Your binder should be divided into five sections. Each section should be clearly labeled by a divider with a tab. The five sections are:

  • Section 1: Bell ringer – all bell ringer activities should go in this section. When you enter the classroom be seated and begin working on today’s bell ringer.
  • Section 2: Notes – All notes taken during the semester should be in your notes section.
  • Section 3: Assignments – any in class or homework assignments should be in this section.
  • Section 4: Handouts – this section should contain anything that I hand out to you in class including bathroom passes, grade log, and this page.
  • Section 5: Any extra point assignments you have finished.

Every two weeks or so, I will check to see that you have all the above materials organized in your binder.

I will not announce these notebook checks ahead of time. If you have not brought your binder to class on the day I do the checks, a grade of 0 will be given for that check.

Chemistry is a subject where each concept is needed to take a step to another. It is important for you to realize that in order to master the concepts in the 4th quarter, you will need to have a strong basis of the concepts in the 2nd quarter. Chemistry is mostly math once we get into the larger concepts and it is imperative that you attend class so that you are not lacking a part of the building blocks needed.

Make up work:

Per our Parish guidelines, daily class work will not be able to be made up. This includes quizzes, or labs. If you are absent for a test, it is your responsibility to make arrangements with me to make up the test no more than five days after you return and only with an excused absence.

Chemistry Guidelines for grading

Grades will occur in a variety of areas. There will be tests, but a large majority of your grade will come from homework and quizzes (both planned and pop). We will also have projects that we do throughout the year that will be given grades of at least 200 points per project. A weekly grade will be given for participation during class as well as a code of conduct grade for the quarter.
