Job purpose
Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry and Queen Mary University of London possess significant expertise in discovery science related to injury. The establishment of the virtual Centre for Trauma Sciences (C4TS) has strengthened the bonds between these groups and provided the framework for local, as well as national and global clinical and fundamental research that is improving outcomes for severely injured patients.
The role of the Operations Manager is to manage and coordinate the activities of the C4TS, both internally and externally with partners across the University, the UK and globally via the International Trauma Research Network (INTRN) which we lead. As well as oversight of the Centre’s day-to-day operations, the post has a strong outward-facing role maintaining and fostering new partnerships with industry and military contacts, as well as funding and research governance bodies (e.g. REC, MHRA).

Advanced theoretical and practical involvementwith scientific research undertakenwithin the NHS, university and/or industry sectors.
Proven experience of project management/coordination fora diversity of teams.
Experience of managing and reporting budgets and resources across a portfolio of research projects.
Demonstrable experience of participation in and organisation of successful research funding applications. / E

Knowledge, skills & abilities / Recent evidence of excellence in developing and managing partnerships, both locally (e.g. with R&D office, PIs) and externally (e.g. other NHS/university sites).

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
- Be responsible for the technical and financial co-ordination, monitoring and timely delivery of the C4TS translational research.
- Engage with senior investigators, external partners and regulatory agencies (e.g. REC, MHRA) to enable and lead the conduct of therapeutic and device trials to enhance trauma patient outcomes.
- Ensure that all mandatory staff training is undertaken and that clinical research and trials activity is conducted according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), College and Trust protocols.
- Effectively manage risks identified in projects, flagging apparent bottlenecks/delays so as to ensure that any issues are swiftly resolved.
- Assist in maintaining and developing new partnerships from within the healthcare, academic, philanthropic and industry areas.
- Support the wide-spread dissemination of the Centre’s progression of its strategic research activities.
- Work with the MSc Trauma Sciences faculty to support existing courses and the development of new education streams.
- Coordinate the continued support and attraction of staff and students to C4TS.
- Lead and continuously review the Unit’s interactions with the Joint Research & Management Office, thereby increasing efficiency of joint operations and the C4TS contribution to the research agenda of the College and Trust.

- Use expertise and experience to make day-to-day decisions to manage and deliver the C4TS mission of successful, collaborative translational research in order to enhance outcomes for trauma patients.
- Be proactive in the identification, scoping and establishment of new contacts and opportunities to further the research of the Centre.
- Own and coordinate the timely submission of the highest quality funding applications.
- Contribute to core University strategy and policy.
Communication & Networking
- Work directly with the C4TS Lead, Clinical Trials Coordinator, research and administrative staff and students to manage and deliver globally applicable translational research through collaboration with trauma centres pan-London, UK-wide and internationally.
- Interact effectively with C4TS stakeholders including staff, industry, government departments, other clinical and academic institutions and charities to provide or obtain information.
- Help the Communications Officer to produce regular newsletters and update/generate material for the C4TS and INTRN websites.
- Represent and promote the work of C4TS at both internal and external meetings/events.
- Support good internal communication through group meetings and briefings.
- Maintain the reputation of the Trauma Sciences as a centre of excellence within the University, pan-London, nationally and internationally.
Finance/Resource Management
- Monitor resources and budgets within allocated projects to ensure maximum values delivered for resources deployed.
- Produce reports on actual and planned expenditure within the projects and the Centre as a whole.
- Develop rigorous study budgets with the Joint Research and Management Office and external project management teams, thereafter ensuring that study payments are made to QMUL, the Trust and other partners as agreed.
- Support research staff and students in application of new funding to support research projects, clinical trials and consortia.
People Management
- No staff supervised but management responsibility for Clinical Trials Coordinator to effectively support and achieve delivery of projects and information-related tasks.
- Manage own time and workload on a medium-term basis (monthly) to support the achievement of strategic objectives.
