CHEM 121 TO: students needing data for an experiment in chemistry 121 FROM: Mr. Euclide

NOTE: You must be present during the laboratory period to get full credit for an experiment. Use this data in your make-up laboratory. Review the syllabus for details. These data will enable you to get partial credit for an experiment. Attach these data to your experiment.

EXPERIMENT: BOTTLES (BOT)

1. A chemistry student wishes to match the bottles (F, G, H, I, J, K) with the corresponding solutions NaCl, LiCl, AgNO3, BaCl2, H2O, Na2CO3 (listed in random order).

2. Use reagents: 6M HCl, AgNO3, Na3CO3, NaCl. Consider the formation of precipitates: AgCl, BaCO3,

CaCO3. Use the conductivity apparatus to determine if a solution conducts. Compounds are ionic except

for H2O.

3. Litmus paper: Base turns red litmus blue. OH- and CO32- ions react with litmus paper in the same way.

Acid turns blue litmus red.

4. Phenolphthalein: Phenolphthalein is colorless in acid and red in base. OH- and CO32- ions react with

phenolphthalein. in the same way.

5. Formation of gas: Acids react with CO32- to form CO2.

6. FLAME TEST: This allows distinguishing the ions Ba2+ (green), Li+ (red), and Na+ (yellow).
