HIGH SCHOOL COVERAGE

Accident or Injury Coverage During Participation in an Athletic Event/Practice

The athlete’s personal health care insurance policy is the first line of coverage.

The Hawkins County Board of Education providessecondary coveragefor up to $10,000 per claim.

TSSAA provides catastrophic coverage once the secondary coverage is exhausted.

Top Gun or Other Cheer/Gymnastic Schools

Athletes are covered by Hawkins County Board of Education Insurance and by TSSAA insurance when attending practice at one of these schools if the cheerleading coach is present.

Transportation to Away Athletic Events or Practices

If/When school transportation is not provided, the athletes are covered by insurance only when traveling in a caravan situation that has been organized by the cheerleading coach or school principal. Coaches must adhere to board policy 3.404 (attached) and TSSAA guidelines when arranging a caravan. Coaches should be part of the caravan.

Athletes, who drive to an event on their own and not within an approved caravan, are not covered by HCBOE insurance or by TSSAA insurance until they arrive at the game/practice.

Cheerleading Competitions

TSSAA insurance covers only Universal Cheerleader and Dance Association sanctioned events.

MIDDLE SCHOOL COVERAGE

Accident or Injury Coverage During Participation in an Athletic Event/Practice

The athlete’s personal health care insurance policy is the first line of coverage.

The Hawkins County Board of Education provides up to $10,000 coverage.

Top Gun or Other Cheer/Gymnastic Schools

Athletes are covered by Hawkins County Board of Education Insurance only if the cheerleading coach is present.

Transportation to Away Events or Practices

Normally, middle school cheerleaders do not travel to away games. However, in the cases when they do travel to an away game or tournament, caravan rules apply.

Transportation to Top Gun or other Cheer/Gymnastic School is covered by HCBOE insurance only when traveling as a properly organized caravan. The cheerleader coachshould be part of the caravan. The sponsor must adhere to HCBOE policy 3.404 (attached) when organizing the caravan.

I have read, acknowledge, and understand insurance coverage as it applies to middle and high school cheerleaders. I further agree to hold harmless the cheerleading coach, the school, or the Hawkins County Board of Education for any accident incurred during transportation to or from an athletic event/practice or for any accident incurred during participation in any athletic event/practice.
