Course Description:
Physics is a laboratory based college preparatory course. Laboratory experiments provide the empirical basis for understanding and confirming concepts. This course emphasizes study of the basic properties and interactions of matter, force, and energy. In this course, methods used by physicists as they construct a consistent picture of the universe are emphasized. Students learn the principles of physics through laboratory investigations, problem solving, teacher-led demonstrations, lecturers, discussions, and individual or group study. Physics AB meets the District graduation requirement for physical science. It also meets one year of the University of California ‘d’ entrance requirement for laboratory science.
The California Science Standards for Physics can be found at http://www.nextgenscience.org.
Grading/Attendance Policy:
Your grades are based on quizzes, lab activities, homework, and exams. Attendance is an important factor in earning your grade, as some assignments cannot be made up (i.e. lab activities)
You are responsible for the loss, or damage to any textbooks issued in this class. Make sure it is covered with a bookcover that protect it sufficiently.
Grading is based on a letter grade system with the following percentage breakdown:
90-100% = A 80-89% = B 65-79% = C 50-64% = D Below 50% = Fail
ü Homework will be issued at the beginning of each chapter.
ü Quizzes will be given at the end of the chapter. Homework and lab assignments will be due before the quiz.
ü All late work will be graded down one letter grade each day it is late.
ü Quizzes and some lab assignments may be made up during an acceptable time for the instructor.
ü You are considered tardy if you are not in your seat when the bell rings.
ü If you have 3 unexcused tardies, you will receive a ‘U’ in work habits. If you have 4 unexcused tardies, you will receive a ‘U’ in cooperation and work habits. If you have 5 or more tardies, you will be referred to the Dean for additional penalties he/she may inflict.
Student/Instructor Behavior Policy:
ü There will be total respect for all persons in my classroom, regardless of race, creed, or gender.
ü Eating and drinking are not tolerated in class. This includes chewing gum and other candies.
ü We can maintain a positive and productive learning environment if these standards are followed.
