Getting There

From I-10 in Banning exit 8th Street/Highway 243 Idyllwild and turn right (south). Go one block to Lincoln Ave and turn left (east). Go one more block to San Gorgonio Ave (Hwy 243) turn right (south). This will put you on the Mountain Road (Hwy 243) towards Idyllwild. Go approx 17-20 miles up this winding mountain road. You will pass a place called Lawler Park and soon after turn left on Forest Service Road 4S02 (look for campground signs like Stone Creek). If you hit a small town called Pine Cove you’ve gone too far. Take the 4S02 for approx 2 miles to the campground. There will be signs to follow.

Introduction

This campground is located in the heavily forested San Jacinto Mountains. The Mountains with their rugged rock outcroppings offer inviting crags for rock climbers and abundant hiking opportunities. However the San Jacinto mountains rise abruptly out of the Desert and temperature changes can be extreme. There are some good lookout spots and several trail heads in the area.

This is a developed campground that offers fire rings¸ piped water¸ vault toilets¸ and picnic tables. The road to the campground is accessible for all vehicles. We have 4 sites reserved with a limit of 2 vehicles per site and no more than 8 people per site. For extra vehicles there is a small over flow parking area about 200 yards from the campground. Parking will be first come first served.

The site parking spaces are short—about 15 feet tops. The picnic tables and fireplaces are down in the trees away from the parking area. All this discourages RVers and gives an edge to tent campers. The water from a spring above the campground is good. Let the tap run for a moment to clear any sediment if the campground has been lightly used. All the facilities are well maintained. The pit toilet bathrooms are surprisingly clean and tiled on the floors and walls. When you first arrive at MarionMountainCampground, it’s difficult to locate the sites. This is because most of them are isolated from each other down in the pines. The pitches are nicely spongy and on pine needles. Through the pine boughs, you’ll see the steep slopes of the mountains across the canyon all covered with pines, oaks, and rocky tors.

The cost will depend on the number of vehicles and people going and will be approx $15 per person for the weekend¸ but could be more or less by a few dollars. Carpooling is strongly suggested.

Average temps for this area in June are highs in the low 80’s and lows in the low 50s. Elevation is 6¸400 feet.
