RESPONSIBILITY

Everyone has responsibility to discharge duties and one among them is "Pithru karma". We are required to perform Shraadha karmas (pithru karma) after the demise of Father. Failure to perform the enshrined duties will earn the wrath of Pithrus and ultimately cursed by them. "Pithru tharpanam" means "to satisfy pithrus".

Here Pithrus are those passed away and referred to as "Pithru Vargam", “Mathamaha Vargam" respectively. Should anyone want peace, wealth and good health for seven generations - they should perform pithru karmas without interruption. Failing to execute these karmas or performing without much interest but as a routine, will not keep the Pithrus happy. Therefore, we request everyone to do it according to laid down procedures and Shradhaa.

Besides these two pithrukarmas (each year shraadham), doing Amaavasya tharpanam, Mahaalaya paksh, Maasa SangramaNams, Eclipse (sun&moon), are important.

WHOM TO PERFORM THARPANAM

  1. Those not having Father &/or Mother, must do.
  2. Such Tharpanam – Pithru (Father) Vargam will comprise of 6 persons. If Mathamaha (Mother Lineage) still lives, then no need to perform Tharpanam for that Lineage.

Grand Mother

If all the 12 persons are no more, then performing Tharpanam for all the 12 is MUST. If anyone is still living, then one more person to be added from the previous lineage.

For example: If in pithruvargam, grandfather is alive, then the sequence will be Pithru (father), Pithu: Prapimamahar (grand father's father),Pithu: Prapimamahar (grand father's grand father) to be performed.

Likewise if mother is alive, Pithamhi, Prapithamahi, Pithu Prapithamahi - to be performed.

If mother is not alive (pithamahi), Matha, Prapithamahi, Pithu Prapithamahi - to be performed.

Similarly, before beginning the Tharpanana mantram, remember clearly the name, gothram or keep it handy (refer to chart above) and then begin Tharpanam.
