Subject: Skunkworks Project - Fun with WSRP

Date: Tue, 2 Nov 2004 17:31:24 -0500 (EST)

Folks,

You may have heard me speak of the NMI Grid Portal Project

( which is currently based on CHEF, but is

moving to uPortal + Sakai.

Beth Kirshner here at UM is taking the lead on this project here and has

been doing some work getting ready for the connection between uPortal and

Sakai using WSRP. My suggestion to OGCE was to do uPortal first and then

Sakai later via WSRP. OCGE is pre-releasing a preview edition of the

Gird-Based uportal at Supercomputing next week.

I attach two screenshots of uPortal and Sakai communicating via WSRP. The

first screenshot is a (very very simple) Sakai tool rendered within uPortal

and the same Sakai tool rendered in Sakai. The tool in both cases is

running on the Sakai server.

Beth has added WSRP4J to Sakai (multi-webapp makes this much easier) and

hooked up the WSRP producer API's.

Of course like any good skunk works project there is a bit of "not

completely general" code involved here, but it is encouraging to see the

basic "trans-continental railway" connected enough for one train to pass.

There is lots of work yet to do - passing single sign on between uPortal and

Sakai and then passing Grid credentials between uPortal and Sakai and then

and then and then...

So while there is still a lot of work to do, it feels good to see this

starting to come together.

/Chuck
