Character Assignment 4

“Secret Service”

Directions:

  1. Read all of these directions before beginning this assignment.
  2. In your Character Notebook, on the next blank page in the assignments section, write “Secret Service” at the top, as the title for the assignment. Write the date in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
  3. This is a PRIVATE assignment. You are not to discuss this or tell others about this.
  4. Think about someone you know (NOT a classmate) that you admire, look up to, or appreciate and write the person’s name on the page.
  5. Think about something you could do for this person or give this person, anonymously, that they would enjoy and write it on the page. This must be something you are able to do. In other words, don’t say you want to buy the person a new car.
  6. Write a note to the person, in your notebook, telling him or her why you are doing this for them. Meet with the teacher to edit the note.
  7. Re-write the note on paper or a notecard to give to the person, anonymously.
  8. By Thursday, you will need to complete your mission. This means you need to do what you said you would like to do for the person. You must include the anonymous note telling the person why you did what you did for them.
  9. Write a paragraph explaining what you did and how it made you feel.
  10. Turn your Character Notebook into your mailbox, as soon as you finish the assignment, but no later than the due date listed on your work plan.
  11. Mark the date on which you completed this assignment on your work plan.

Example:

Secret Service

Who:Dave Perry

What I Would Like to Do:I would like to leave a Starbuck’s gift card for him at his place of employment.

Note to Dave:Dave,

I hope that you are having a great day. I want you to know how much I appreciate you. You have helped me with problems that I couldn’t have fixed by myself. Whenever I asked, you were there to answer my questions. Thank you for being the kind of person that helps others. You set a wonderful example for others, but especially for me. Enjoy this gift!

An Admirer

What I Did/How I Felt:I went to the place Dave works, while he was at dinner and I left an envelope for him on his desk, with the gift card inside. It was exciting to try to deliver my gift without him knowing it was from me. After I had delivered the envelope, I couldn’t help smiling. It was a great feeling to know that I was about to make someone’s day. When I left, I kept wondering if he had found it yet and how he reacted. I hope he enjoyed getting the gift as much as I enjoyed giving it to him.
