2432.35b / Upgrades direction on temporary roads.2432.35b - Temporary Roads
All temporary roads are intended for short term use only. Temporary roads are not intended for use beyond the planting of trees after harvesting. All temporary roads will be scarified and obliterated to the extent possible in order to maintain the productive capability of the land, restore hydrologic conditions, and reduce opportunities for wildlife harassment. All roads will be closed upon completion of purchasers use unless C6.62# is present in the contract. Use of C6.62# will require documentation of the need for keeping the road open in the Environmental Assessment, as well as describing a timeline and responsibility for closure/obliteration. All Interdisciplinary Teams will address the purpose and need for temporary roads, whether rocking is permitted, and the desired condition of the road after final use. There may be cases where a temporary road is justified, but because of the ground conditions (steep ground, stream crossings, etc.) a low-standard specified road is more appropriate because of greater control in design and construction.
Each Subunit will track and monitor all temporary roads. The Subunit will track and monitor the road status from initial construction through final closure/obliteration on the DG database provided by the Forest. The responsible function for each phase during the life of the road will be identified. Reports will be submitted to the Forest Supervisor on March 31, and September 30 annually using the standard report form developed by the Forest.
Each road will be identified at the time of construction with a white carsonite stake, 3-4 feet high, with black letters. The numbering format will be:
TDYYXXX
T= Identifier for temporary roads
D= District number
YY= Year road was built
XXX= Three digit identifier assigned by Subunit
