Chapter 2 Goals:
- To understand that God reveals the truth (aka his divine revelation) to us in through scripture and tradition.
- To trust that scripture and tradition guide us in knowing how to live
- To listen to God’s word in scripture and follow the guidance of tradition

- We Want The Truth
- Hard to tell the difference between truth and opinion? rumor? false information?
- Lots of what we see on tv, social media are persuasive but is it the truth or what somebody else wants us to believe?
- We need to be careful, because we want the decisions we make to be based on what is true and what is right so we live a good life.
- Scripture and Tradition Reveal the Truth
- Divine Revelation-the truth of how much God loves us is communicated through written word and living message
- Scripture (sacred scripture, the Bible)
- 73 books written over a span of 2,000 years by people under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit
- Divine Inspiration guarantees that scripture contains God’s word and ensures it is his truth--no mistakes.
- Old Testament
- Developed by ancient Israelites / Hebrews (our faith ancestors) first by telling stories by word of mouth and later by writing it down
- Synagogues were places to study scripture
- First 5 books of our Old Testament =The Torah
- New Testament
- Developed by Jesus’ apostles and disciples first through word of mouth and then through writing and INSPIRED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
- Included Jesus’ life, miracles, teachings, parables, lessons, passion, death and resurrection
- Used these writings to go and teach about Jesus
- Created a community of disciples who proclaimed Jesus as the Son of God and Savior.
- Epistles- Letters written to early Christian communities about Jesus’
- Gospels- accounts of Jesus’ life
- Book of Revelation
- Tradition- the revelation of the good news of Jesus as lived out in the church, past and present--it LIKE AN ONGOING PERSONAL MESSAGE THAT HELPS US UNDERSTAND THE MEANING BEHIND THE SCRIPTURE

- Essential to our lives as catholics because it helps us understand and live God’s truth.
- The Church Lives By The Truth
- “The Deposit of Faith” is all the truth contained in scripture and tradition
**Revealed by Jesus to Apostles, their successors--today’s pope and bishops, priests, and entire church
- Community-We gather to pray, worship, hear God’s word in scripture and to discover God’s truth
- When we gather together at mass on Sunday, holy days
- Magisterium- The church’s teaching office that guides the church consisting of the Pope and bishops
- Guided by the Holy Spirit helps us interpret scripture and tradition
- New issues and questions that arise are scrutinized so that we can understand God’s divine revelation about them
- Helps us to understand how to apply scripture and tradition to our lives
- They write letters, documents and make statements for the church to read/hear and follow
- Faith is from one generation to the next is shared and built upon. God’s revelation is always active and strengthened.
