Up until the late 1800’s European exploration and imperialism of Africa was largely limited to the coastal regions. Apprehensive of disease and conflict with local African rulers, Europeans were at first content to restrict their involvement to coastal trading ports. As the nineteenth century progressed Europe became eager to increase their commercial ventures, expand their political empires and widen their missionary endeavors into the interior regions of Africa. The result would become known as the European “Scramble for Africa,” in which European countries would exert their influence to the depths of Africa, forever changing the continent.
