1. abolitionists – people who wanted to outlaw slavery /
2. fugitive – runaway slave
3. Fugitive Slave Act – law that forced everyone to turn in runaway slaves /
4. sectionalism – loyalty to one’s section or region rather than the country as a whole
5. Missouri Compromise – compromise that added Missouri as a slave state, Maine as a free state, and for the territory above the Mason Dixon Line (Misriouri Comp. Line) to be free /
6. Free Soil Party – political party that was formed by antislavery Democrats and Whigs that wanted to prevent slavery from spreading into the territories
7. secede – to leave or withdraw /
8. Compromise of 1850 – compromise where California enters as a free state and the South gets a more strict Fugitive Slave law in return; this upsets the balance of power in the Senate
9. Stephen A. Douglas – Senator who wrote the Compromise of 1850, introduced the Kansas-Nebraska Act, & ran against Lincoln in the election of 1860 /
10. popular sovereignty – the idea that the people had the right to vote on whether or not to allow slavery in the territories
11. Kansas-Nebraska Act – allowed for popular sovereignty in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska; cancels or repeals the Missouri Compromise /
12. border ruffians – Missourians who traveled in armed groups to cote in Kansas’s election during the mid-1850s
13. John Brown – abolitionist who led a violent raid on the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, VA; was seen as a hero or martyr by Northerners /
14. Bleeding Kansas – violence that erupted between pro- and antislavery forces in Kansas
15. civil war – conflict between opposing groups of citizens of the same country /
16. Dred Scott –slave who had once lived on free land, he sued for his freedom but the Supreme Court said he was still a slave
17. Republican Party – antislavery party that was formed in the North in 1854 /
18. Abraham Lincoln – elected to the presidency in 1860; did not support the spread of slavery
19. Harper’s Ferry – John Brown led an attack by abolitionist on the federal arsenal here /
20. border states-- states between the North and the South that were divided over whether to stay in the Union or join in the Confederacy
21. secession—withdrawal from the Union /
22. The Confederacy – new government formed by the Southern states that seceded from the Union
23. Jefferson Davis – president of the Confederacy /
24. state’s rights-- belief that states’ rights supersede (or go above) federal rights and law
25. FortSumter – U.S. fort where the first fighting of the Civil War occurred
