Chapter 1 Notes: (complete)
- Four main topics of AP Statistics as stated by the College Board
- Exploratory analysis (describing data)
- Sampling and Experimentation (designing an experiment)
- Anticipating Patterns (probability)
- Statistical Inference (drawing conclusions from data)
- 1.3 – Data Analysis
- Descriptive Statistics
- Definition:Methods of collecting, organizing and summarizing data
- Examples:45% of High School seniors have a job
- Inferential Statistics
- Definition: Generalizing information from a sample to a population
- Examples:From a random sample of 20 CHS seniors it was found that 9 had a job, it is reasonable to believe that approximately 45% of CHS seniors have a job
- Population
- Definition:The entire collection of individuals or objects about which information is desired
- Examples:All seniors at Crosby High School
- Sample
- Definition:A subset of a population selected for study by a set method
- Examples:20 seniors from CHS selected at random
- 1.4 – types of data
- Variable
- Definition: Any characteristics that can change from one individual to another
- Examples:Weight, Height, Age, Number of siblings, etc….
- Categorical Data(or qualitative data)
- Definition:Data that is described by non-numeric values
- Examples:eye color, marital status, phone number (numbers can be qualitative if their selection is not sequential)
- Numerical Data (or quantitative data)
- Definition:Data that is described by numeric values
- Examples:age, weight, steps taken to kitchen
- Discrete Numerical Data
- Definition:Numeric data that can only be isolated points on a number line
- Examples:number of bathroom breaks taken, number of teeth
- Continuous Numerical Data
- Definition:Numeric data that can be any value within a range on a number line
- Examples:Age, weight, miles per gallon
- Bivariate and Multivariate Data
- Definition:Data that consist of multiple observations per individual
- Examples:height and weight, favorite color and gender
- 1.4 - Simple Graphical displays
- Frequency Distribution
- Definition:A table that displays frequencies of categorical data
- Examples:
- Bar Chart
- Definition:A graph of a
- Examples:
- Dotplot
