Objective:

  • The computer lab at the Open Door School-Age Program is designed to engage, educate and edify the students and participants of the ministry and to offer a safe environment for the kids to play and learn.

Goals:

  • To provide access to the children that are enrolled with the after-school program at Open Door
  • To be used as an incentive for good behavior
  • To bring awareness of technology to participants
  • To equip the students with the foundational skills necessary to operate some of the basic computer or technology programs available to them
  • To provide a safe environment for surfing the web through internet safety curriculum
  • Provide tutoring and homework help where applicable to the students
  • Actively test and promote high standards of learning in the computer lab
  • To eventually be available to provide the community with opportunities to use the computer lab, in efforts to bridge the gap of the technological divide between those of lower socio-economic status

General Policies:

  • Students may only login as a guest under the username, “Student.”
  • Only staff and volunteers will have access to the passwords
  • Only students who have participated in an Internet Safety class and passed Quiz 1 may use the computers.
  • There will be a checklist posted in the computer lab listing which kids have passed Quiz 1.
  • Students must sign up in the Computer Log before sitting down at a computer.
  • Staff and volunteer can remove any file, program, or piece of software from any computer or machine.
  • Each computer will have an Internet blocking and tracking device installed.
  • Any user of the computer lab engaged in inappropriate internet access is an automatic dismissal from the lab until further notice.
  • Inappropriate Internet usage will be defined as the viewing of pornography, violent games, participating in chat rooms, and giving away any personal information
  • Staff members and volunteers reserve the right to make judgments on disciplinary actions taken in the computer lab and have the right to remove anyone from the lab at any time for any reason. Unruly users and people who violate the rules will be asked to leave the lab.
  1. All users must sign in before sitting down to work. 
  1. A teacher must log you onto a computer. 
  1. You may only be on the computer for 20 minutes at a time. 
  1. If you are on “computers” you may select a website under the

“computers” menu. If you are on “special activities” you can chose

from any of the websites. 

  1. Do not visit a new website without asking a teacher. 
  1. No violent games with blood or weapons. 
  1. No movies or video clips unless started by a teacher. 
  1. No standing around and watching others on computers. 
  1. No food or drink near the computers. 

10. No playing or spinning in chairs. 

Orientation for K – 2nd...... 2 30 min. sessions

(recommend the sessions on different days)

Session 1
  1. Play “Clicky’s What to Do on the Web” and review with children. (

  1. Play Netsmartz: "The Webville Outlaws." ( Call on children to choose which outlaw to select. Review the Outlaw characters by using their pictures cut out from (
/ 10 min.
  1. Have the kids play "Clicky's Challenge." (
/ 10 min.
4. Read through the ISP with the children and have them sign it. / 5 min.
Session 2
  1. Again, review the Outlaw characters by using their pictures.

  1. Have the kids play "Clicky's Challenge" again.
/ 5 min.
  1. If children are able to read and write their names, pass out ISP for children; review and have them sign it.
/ 10 min.
  1. Have the children listen to the tunes on the Netsmartz website ( To end, call on several to tell which was their favorite, why, and what it taught them (tell them that this will be asked as they begin to listen).

Orientation for 3rd – 6th ...... 2 30-minute sessions

(recommend the sessions on different days)

Session 1
  1. From NetSmartz, play "Meet the WizzyWigs" (

  1. Review the WizzyWig characters by using their pictures cut out from (
/ 5 min.
  1. Have the kids play "WizzyWig Guessing Game I" and "WizzyWig Guessing Game II" (netsmartzkids.org/activities/nsrules/wwguess1.htm),(netsmartzkids.org/activities/nsrules/wwguess2.htm).

  1. Play "Who's Your Friend on the Internet?" (netsmartzkids.org/activities/nsrules/whofriend.htm), letting the majority call out their choices. Make sure they’ve gotten the point of the game: that people may not be what they seem online.

Session 2
  1. Again, review the WizzyWig characters by using their pictures cut out from (

  1. At their computers, have the kids play "Which WizzyWig is Which?" (
/ 10 min.
  1. Pass out ISP, review it thoroughly and have participants sign it. Make sure the consequences for violations have been clearly reiterated.

  1. For younger children (or less advanced readers), do the activity detailed in ( to finish up with the WizzyWigs or let them explore the Netsmartz site on their own.

For good readers, play the game by clicking the “BONUS.COM” button on the left of the screen a( Have one of the students read the introduction and let them play independently. / 25 min.

  1. Present the online safety presentation and allow for questions or comments.

Bonus: Have students work their way through the websafecrackerz site ( offering a reward to the first student or any students reaching the various checkpoints in the game.

Orientation for Adults...... 30 min. session

  1. Present the online safety presentation and allow for questions or comments.

1. I will obey the rules set-up by the Open Door School-Age Program for going on-line; including WHO may be on computers (those on “computer” and above) WHEN I may be on-line (free time); HOW LONG I may be on-line (20 min.); appropriate sites for me to visit (only sites on the drop-down lists).

2. I will turn off my computer monitor rightaway and tell a teacher if anything makes me feel scared, uncomfortable,or confused.

3. I will tell my teacher if anyone online asks me my name,my address, my telephone number,or the name and location of my school. And I will tell my teacher if anyone online asks to meet me in person.

4. I will not click on advertisements or downloads.

5. I will not use rude or mean languageon the Internet.

6. I will not play violent games.

I will tell a staff member if I come across any information that makes me feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused. I will never respond to any messages that are rude or offensive in any way.

Since the biggest danger to my safety is getting together with someone I have first “met” online, I won’t meet in person with anyone unless my parents agree to the meeting, they will go with me to the meeting, and the meeting will be in a public place.

I will always treat others the way I would like to be treated. I will respect copyright laws and check on sources. When writing reports I will make sure that the online sources of information are credible, and I will always cite my sources. I will never download things such as pictures, games, music, or movies that have not been given to the public for free.
