POP Art Project:AIM: Students will learn how to look critically at their own popular culture and analyze the images that bombard them every day. Using visual art and technology (you may want to take photos of items around you/you are influenced by and print them off to glue onto your project) as the medium for expression, students will…

Start collecting cut-out words/ phrases from newspapers, magazines, etc. that describes your character/personality, beliefs, ambitions, dreams, etc. Include pictures of products, people, music artists, etc., that you are influenced by/ popular items from your “pop culture.” . Think about your relationship with POP Culture. Are you influenced by POP Culture and the media? We will begin this next week.

Vocabulary:

Culture - Behaviours, ideas, skills and customs of a group of people.

Logo - A visual symbol that identifies a business, club, individual or group.

Motif - Repeated unit to create visual rhythm.

Repetition - Technique for creating unity and rhythm by using a single element or motif over and over again.

Style - Style is the artist's ways of presenting things. Use of materials, methods of working, design qualities, choice of subject matter, etc. reflect the individual, culture or time period.

Subject - A topic or idea represented in an art work.

Mass Media-the means of communication that reach large numbers of people in a short time, such as television, newspapers, magazines, and radio.

Icon-a person regarded as a sex symbol or as a symbol of a belief or cultural movement

Mixed Media – the use of 2 or more art mediums in an art work; for example, an art work where crayon, paint and chalk are all used together.

Image-any picture, drawing, sculpture or photograph or other form that creates a likeness or representation of an object.

Pop Art–1950’s-1960’s- An art form that used American mass culture and everyday commercial items from foods, cars, and famous people. The two most famous artists of this era were Lichtenstein (who based his artwork on comic strips, advertising and bubblegum wrappers) and Warhol (who showed soup can labels and movie stars in repetition.)

Silkscreening –a print made by forcing ink through a fine (silk) mesh that has been treated to give blank areas.

Pop Culture - frequently encountered or widely accepted or commonly liked or approved.
