Exploring the Essential Question: What forces work for and against supranational cooperation

among nations?

In this lesson, you explored supranational cooperation in Europe. Now you will use what you learned. Use the cartoon, the table, and your knowledge of geography to complete this task.

The Task: Analyzing a Political Cartoon

Not all EU members were in the euro zone by 2009. Some chose not to adopt the common currency. Others were not allowed to use the euro until their economies improved. Both groups are listed in the table. Use this information to help you decide what the cartoonist wanted to show about the impact of the euro. Is the euro uniting the EU countries? Or is the euro dividing the EU countries?

14. Step 1: Circle the countries in the cartoon whose borders have been partly erased. Circle these same countries in the table. Describe the pattern you see.

Step 2: Do more countries exist inside the euro zone or outside the euro zone as of 2009. How many? Does outside or inside have more?

Step 3: In the space below, write a paragraph about the cartoon. Your paragraph should

a. describe what the cartoon shows.

b. state what you think the cartoonist wanted to show about the impact of the euro on Europe.

c. use details from the cartoon to support your position.
