NURS 130, 35955, 1006: Nursing Assistant (6 Credits)

Course Schedule and Location:

Orientation will be held at GBC, Dorothy Gallagher Health Science Building on March 28, 2016, from 5-7 PM in HSC 107, Lovelock GBC PCMS Education Building. You will meet your instructors at this time.

Theory will be done online from Monday March 28, 2016 through Sunday April 10, 2016, by 11:59 PM. Students will complete their own theory online at their own pace, however, it must be completed by the date and time listed above. All assignments and online quizzes must be submitted by Sunday April 10, 2016, at 11:59 PM. Otherwise, the course will not be considered complete.

Practice lab for skills practice will be held:

Tuesday April 12, 4-9 PM, Thursday April 14, 4-9 PM, Saturday April 10, 7 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday April 19 4-9 PM, Thursday April 21 4-9 PM, and Saturday April 16th, 7 AM to 6 PM, in room 109, GBC Dorothy Gallagher Health Sciences Building. Street clothes are permitted for practice.

Clinical days will be held:

All clinical days will be held at the hospital, unless informed otherwise. Dates for clinical are May 3 & 5 from 4-9 PM; Saturday May 7th from 0630-3:30 PM; Tuesday May 10th from 4-9 PM; Thursday May 12th from 4-9 PM; and Saturday May 14th from 0630 AM to 10:30 AM (We will return to the college for finals and make some community visits if possible You can plan on being here until 3:30 PM). Scrubs, white shoes, ID badges, and watches will be worn for all clinical experiences.

PLEASE NOTE- If a students is unable to complete any portion of the course, they will receive an incomplete or they are able to withdraw without penalty by March 31, 2016. Last drop date is April 24, 2016. If you do not withdraw you will receive an ‘F” in this course.

Catalog Description:

Provides students with classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. Didactic portion of this course is taught online. Successful completion fulfills the requirements for eligibility to take the State Certified Nursing Assistant Examination. Prerequisite: Current CPR certification. Must show proof of current negative TB test or chest x-ray.

Books are available at the Great Basin College Bookstore.

Printed scrubs may be worn, however, do not purchase cartoon characters. The scrubs are tobe clean and pressed. Clean white sneakers or nursing shoes must be worn. Shoes must cover toes and have a back. You must wear a watch with a second hand. These items along with name badge will be worn during all clinical experiences and can be purchased on the Internet, Code 3, Family Dollar, or at Wal-Mart. There is also a uniform store on 5th street (Code 3).

Course Description:

The course is designed to introduce the student to the health care field of nursing assistant. It will provide students with classroom, practical (laboratory) and clinical experience to develop the basic competencies required for certification as a nursing assistant. It will also provide the student with knowledge and skills that are prerequisite to job entry and that comply with both Nevada State Statutes and the federal law. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be eligible to apply for the Nevada State Certification Examination that is required for employment as a nursing assistant.

Learner Outcomes:

Nursing assistant education strives to prepare individuals with skills necessary for safe and competent practice and the skills necessary for certification as specified by Nevada Revised Statutes and required for employment as a nursing assistant. Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Define the role of a nursing assistant.
  2. Describe the responsibilities of a nursing assistant.
  3. Perform specified skills required to function as a member of the health care team.
  4. Demonstrate safe, competent care within the practice guidelines of a nursing
  5. assistant.
  6. Provide care in accordance with the rights of every patient.

A 100% is required on all skills listed on the Performance Log. Students are permitted to practice skills on the Performance Log until 100% accuracy is achieved. Skills tests on the Performance Log must be given by a registered nurse.

A minimum grade of 84% is required on the final cumulative test. Retake is not permitted. The nursing assistant curriculum is a competency based curriculum which allows for variation in completion time because of differences in individual learners. However, all requirements must be completed by the end of the scheduled date of the course.

Method of Instruction:

The method of instruction will follow the Nursing Assistant Training Program Model Curriculum Guide for the Nevada State Board of Nursing. The curriculum is divided into 18 units which include objectives, vocabulary and suggested content. The program is 120 hours. Classroom (theory) and laboratory work will be 80 hours, 40 hours of which will be online. The student will complete 40 hours training in a clinical facility. The clinical training will include the following: The Nursing Assistant in Long-Term Care, Ethical and Legal Issues, Communication Skills, Communication Challenges, Diversity and Human Needs/Development, Safety and Body Mechanics, Infection Prevention, Emergency Care, First Aid, Disasters, Admission/Transfers/Discharge, Physical Exams, Bed making and Unit Care, Personal Care, Vital Signs, Nutrition and Fluid Balance, The body systems, Cancer, Rehabilitation & Restorative Care, Subacute Care, End of Life Care, and Your New Position as a Nursing Assistant.

Grading Policy and Criteria:

A. Manual Skills Demonstration Examination

  1. The student will achieve 100% demonstrating the skills listed on the Performance Log and following the specified steps in the procedure.
  2. The student will demonstrate performance in a professional manner, using appropriate communication and respect for patient’s rights.
  3. A manual skills exam will be given. Basic skills will be demonstrated. The student will not be told which skills he/she will perform prior to the time of the exam.

B. Written Examination

There will be a total of Twenty Eightindividual quizzes at 20 points each, one for each chapter. No retake of quizzes will be provided. These quizzes will be done independently online. There will also be one final written test, at the end of the course and will be done online in the Academic Success Center. Final test will be worth 100 points for a total of 660 points on tests points.The student will must achieve a minimum of 84% on the written final examination.

If the student has demonstrated great difficulty with written examinations, arrangements can be made to take the exam orally. It is the student’s responsibility to request the oral rather written exam prior to the time of testing.Ninety minutes is allowed for the final examination. The exam is made up of multiple choice questions.

C. Online Assignments

Each chapter will have an online assignment to complete and submit in the dropbox of WebCampus. Each chapter assignment is worth 10 points, for a total of 280 points. Students are able to progress through the online portion at their own speed. Questions to the instructor should be done through WebCampus e-mail or on the class discussion board.

Total points for the course equals 1040. All clinical and skills practice are Pass/Fail.

The following grading scale is used on all graded work or assignments:

A = 100-94% C+ = 79-77% D- = 63-60%

A- = 93%-90% C = 76% F = Below 59%

B+ = 89-87%C- = 75-70%

B = 86%-84% D+= 69-67%

B- = 83-80%D = 66-64%

Day One Orientation: Monday March 28, 2016, 5-7 PM, at the following sites: GBC, Dorothy Gallagher Health Sciences Building #107; Battle Mountain GBC Computer Lab; Lovelock GBC PCMS Education Building; and Pahrump GBC PVC 113.

1-Student/Instructor introductions.

2-Students will be provided the necessary information for the course and for Nevada State Board of Nursing. Fingerprinting, applications, and student handbook is provided and reviewed.

3-Review components of the online component of course and syllabus.

PART ONE: ONLINE MODULESMarch 28, 2016-April 3, 2016 (Modules completed on Webcampus)

Modules 1-28 will be completed online by the student at their own speed. Each of 28 modules contains a reading assignment, a Power Point, objectives, videos, and a homework assignment that needs to be turned into the instructor at the end of each module. Date for completion of all 28 modules must be completed by the date in which students come into the skills practice setting. The Theory Instructor, Peggy Drussel, is responsible for correcting all online submitted work by the students.
