Eratosthenes Lab Report Directions

·  TITLE (think like stating problem/question)

o  Do you have a meaningful title… “Eratosthenes Lab” won’t cut it! Include the who, what, when, where, and why.

·  PURPOSE (2 paragraphs)

Problem statement and Background Info

§  What is the problem or question you are trying to solve?

§  Does your background paragraph thoroughly explain the Who, What, When, Where, and Why of what Eratosthenes did? Dates! Locations! Equations and Angles!

o  Hypothesis

§  Do you explicitly state your hypothesis in an “if, then” related to a % error and WHY!

§  Does your hypothesis paragraph explain why you picked this percentage error in relation to your angle method?

·  TEST OF HYPOTHESIS

o  Procedures

§  Are you thorough? Could someone read this and replicate exactly what you did outside?

§  Do you explain how do find the calculations after the experiment…including the correction factor?

o  Data

§  Put your calculations here! Including your percent error!

§  Explain your variables in your equations.

·  CONCLUSION

o  Most Important Part! This is where you show me that you understand the scientific process behind experimentation, and you can analyze what you did!

o  You must FIRST address your hypothesis by restating it and saying if you were you correct or not?

o  WHY were you correct or incorrect in your hypothesis? You must thoroughly support your answer!

o  What extensions can you make to this lab. What could you do differently to improve your method?

______

***Things to consider***

·  Do not use informal language in your paper. You are writing as a scientist! Do not use phrases such as “mess up”, “those things”, “kinda”.

·  NO PRONOUNS (I, me, we, my, our, he, she, our, etc)!

·  Make sure you explain yourself! You should always be asking yourself if you have explained the who, what, when, where, and why! Especially the why and how!

·  Be specific and detailed. Do not leave gaps in your writing. You should read your report front to back when you are finished and see if it flows! Even though you are writing this in sections (WITH HEADINGS FOR EACH SECTION), this is still one lab report, that must be connected throughout.

·  Make sure to use your conclusion to explain your results and analyze what you did! This is your time to explain what happened, why it happened, if you were correct in your hypothesis, why you were correct or incorrect, and what you can do in the future to make this better!

·  Come in for help if you are lost, but I want to see that you have made an attempt first! Then we can work to correct what you are having trouble with.
