SWAN VALLEY COMMUNITY

Swan Valley CPE offers a special focus on rural community spiritual care issues. Ministry sites include acute, long term, outpatient and mental health. Sites are also available in neighbouring Saskatchewan. The theme of the program is pilgrimage and seeks to connect the spiritual to our relationship with land, extended family culture and community. Students have an opportunity to learn from leaders and elders from First Nations.

Swan Valley Community CPE is located in the town of Swan River Manitoba which is located in mid-western Manitoba. Students in this program do not register at the U. of Winnipeg.

Inter-faith Health Care Association of Manitoba (IHCAM) Extended CPE unit

This program based out of Fred Douglas Lodge will offer a variety clinical experiences in member institutions of ICHAM. Led by Provisional Supervisor Paul Peters Derry, with the oversight of Teaching Supervisors Mary Holmen and Tim Frymire. This 2 day a week program will offer diverse settings such as: Medicine, Surgery, ER, Adult Psychiatry,Chronic Care, Geriatric Medicine, Palliative Care, Personal Care, and assisted living. BRANDON REGIONAL HEALTH CENTRE

The Brandon Regional Health centre is a 330

VICTORIA GENERAL HOSPITAL

The VGH is a 220 bed acute-care facility with medical, surgical, mental health, critical care, emergency and oncology units. The VGH provides students with the opportunity to develop spiritual care competencies asmembers of an interdisciplinary treatment team. CPE Courses

Course Tuition Fee (per unit) $1180.08+ UWSA incidental student fees. International Students have an additional surcharge. Note Fees may change without notice. Please see Theology website for current and additional information about student fees.

FULL TIME or “intensive” Units require that students attend full-time from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, five days a week for 11 weeks. (400 hours minimum). Some weekend assignments will also be expected of participants.

EXTENDED UNITS normally consist of two days per week for thirty weeks (400 hours minimum). They provide participants with a unit of training equal to the full-time unit.

Application Procedure

Contact the Supervisor in the SPE Learning Centre of your choice. Contact information is outlined in this brochure. Early application (at least 6 months ahead) is recommended.

1. Request an application for the CPE program from the United Centre for Theological Studies office, Mailing address: Room 1MS26, U of W,515 Portage Ave. Wpg. MB.R3B 2E9. Physical address is 520 Portage Ave.

2. Send the completed CPE application form to the SPE Centre(s) to which you are applying.

3. Since only a limited number of participants can be accepted, applications will be dealt with in order of receipt. A review committee will accept and invite a limited number of applicants for a personal interview to be held at a mutually convenient time. Students applying to more than one centre will be interviewed jointly whenever possible.

  1. Submit completed course registration forms along with signed acceptance letter from CPE supervisor to theSandy Peterson, UCTS, Room 1MS26, U of W. Fees are paid directly to the U of W.

Note: In addition to the bursaries available from the U of W, the Manitoba Region of CASC offers a bursary for CASC members doing further CPE training. Please inquire when speaking to the site supervisor.

A unique interprofessional learning opportunity exploring meaning, presence, and identity offering care in the healthcare setting. There are four course choices (each available for credit):

Supervised Pastoral Education for Spiritual Care: CPE and Related Courses

in Manitoba

The purpose of programs in Supervised Pastoral Education is to assist the provider of spiritual care to become more effective in the practice of ministry. This form of theological education includes developing a better understanding of people, their difficulties and deeper spiritual experiences and achieving greater self-awareness in relation to spiritual care.

This experientially-based approach provides:

* intensive involvement with people in crisis

*supervised clinical calls

*clinical conferences with other professionals

*seminars, reading, worship

*theological reflection

These programs are designed for all persons interested in providing spiritual care, such as clergy, religious volunteers, and theology students. Opportunities are available for qualified participants to move toward certification as a Specialist in Spiritual Care and/or a Teaching Supervisor.

This training is in accordance with the standards of The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care*. Academic credit is available upon application to qualified students through the United Centre for Theological Studies, University of Winnipeg. The CPE Supervisors are part of theEducators group within the UCTS.
