PES University has earned many accolades in Science, Engineering and Technology and is now moving towards setting excellence in Applied Economics & Development Studies. The leadership of the University has decided to begin a unique programme of M.Sc. in Applied Economics and Ph. D programme at its newly established Centre for Development Studies (CDS@PES) with the best faculty to run the programme. First time in the country, CDS will have a laboratory in economics established for students and scholars to master applied aspects of economics. It is unique in many aspects and hence attracts the best of talents from all over the country. It is named as Centre for Development Studies @ PES to emphasize the point that economists must focus on development orientation rather than routine learning of theories without understanding their field applications.

  1. Ph.D PROGRAMME at CDS

PES University has designed two separate Ph.D programmes (Ph.D in Economics and Ph.D in Development Studies) to create academic scholars in economics as well as professionals and scholars in non-economics who are capable of conducting studies relating to economic and development issues at the national and global level, from a quantitative and inter-disciplinary perspective. Special care has been taken to structure the programme such that it emphasizes research training supervised by bestfaculty.The research supervisors at CDS are Prof R S Deshpande, Dr Chidambaran Iyer, Dr Akshay Dhume, Dr Satyasiba Bedamatta andDr Prachitha J.

PES offers three categories of Ph.D Programme –

i) Full-Time: Candidates pursue Ph.D on a full time basis;

ii) Internal Part-Time: For candidates working at PES University;

iii) External Part-Time: Candidates from other organizations.

Ph.D scholars shall be guided by their respective supervisors and Doctoral Committees constituted for each student. Doctoral Committee will meet at least once in six months and provide valuable inputs, besides monitoring progress of their researchwork. The guiding factor of Ph.D programme in PES will be its focus on multidisciplinary approach in social science research.

  1. Ph.D COURSEWORK

During the first year, the student will have to undertake 4 core courses and two mandatory courses - Research Communicationand Research Methodology. Flexibility will be offered to students as per the PESU norms.

  1. Eligibility for Admission

Eligibility criteria for admissions to the Ph D programme is given in the table below. Candidates who have pursued Bachelor and/or Master’s degree under distance education will not be eligible. Candidates who have appeared and are awaiting their final semester post-graduate results are eligible to apply for admission subject to fulfilment of the admission requirements.

Aspirants must satisfy the following requirements:

Ph.D in Economics / Bachelor (above 60 percent)
Master’s in any branch of Economics (above 60 percent) / Agricultural Economics/Urban & Infrastructure Economics/ Environmental Economics/ Ecological Economics/ Economics of Education & Health/ Population Studies/ Industrial Economics/ Trade
Ph.D in Development Studies / Bachelor (above 60 percent)
Master’s in any discipline(above 60 percent) / Interdisciplinary research will be encouraged with an underlying emphasis on social sciences
  1. Scholarship

Candidates who have passed UGC JRF shall be paid the fellowship as per the UGC norms, upon receipt of fellowship grant from UGC. These fellowship holders should comply with all the requirements of the UGC, from time to time.

Apart from the UGC scholarships, PES University may institute some special scholarships for deserving and meritorious full-time students. Details will be shared with the selected scholars by the administration.

  1. Selection and Admission Procedure

Admissions for the Ph.D programme will be open round the year. Candidates shall submit their application to the Registrar in following format:

  1. Application Requirements:
  1. Cover letter
  2. Application form
  3. Photocopy of Certificates–UG/PG, others
  4. Photocopies of marks cards, transcripts
  5. Statement of Purpose (Proposal for Ph.D work)
  6. Three Recommendation Letters :-one each from UGand PG faculties and one from employer (for those with work experience). For freshers' the third recommendation letter can be from an academic who can comment on the candidate’s research capability.
  7. Copy of UGC NET Certificates (if any)
  8. No objection letter from the employer for working professionals.
  1. Processing of Applications:
  1. Submit hardcopy of the application with enclosures to Registrar, PES University
  2. Meet Registrar, Dean of Research, domain heads, potential Research Supervisors
  3. WRITTEN TEST AND INTERVIEW WILL BE HELD AT PES UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, BANGALORE.
  4. Selection by Research Admissions Committee
  1. Amenities and Infrastructure:

Laboratory for Economics, Library, Hostel Accommodation and other Facilities will be available for the scholars.

Note:

  • Candidates with UGC-JRF- NET may be given preference.
  • Candidates applying for both the courses:
  1. Separate proposals need to be enclosed for each of the programmes if the candidate is applying for both the programmes
  2. Candidates applying for both the programmes will be required to write separate entrance examinations
  • Incomplete applications will not be processed.
