Centre for Community Learning & Development (CCL&D)delivers programs in adult literacy (academic upgrading), leadership development, immigrant integration, civic engagement, as well as skills development and volunteerism for youth. We equip individuals with tools for individual growth and empower them to promote positive change in their community.

The Academic Upgrading provides adults with support to improve their reading, writing, numeracy, communication management, and digital technology skills. The program is student-centered, goal-oriented, and tailored to each individual’s learning needs. Learning occurs in small classes with leaners who are preparing to pursue one of five goal paths: post-secondary, secondary school credit, apprenticeship, employment, or independence.

We are seeking for volunteers (ages 19 and older) to be a one-to-one tutor or lead a small group of adult learners. The commitment is 2 hours a week, for at least one year. Volunteers will support learners to develop skills they are interested in – such as reading, writing, math and computers. We are especially in need of volunteers who experience working with consumer/survivors of the mental health system and/or teaching English as a second language. Volunteer Tutors are also eligible to participate in professional development opportunities, provide workshop facilitation during our Civic Engagement week(s) for learners, and acted as supply instructors.

Responsibilities:

- Attend mandatory volunteer orientation

- Create a supportive and encouraging learning environment for learners

- Support learners in working toward their short-term and long-term learning goals

- Commit to meeting with a learner for 2 hours per week, for at least 1 year

- Check in with CCL&D staff for support and resources as needed

Skills and Qualifications:

- An understanding of issues faced by marginalized communities

- An awareness of anti-oppression and social justice issues

- An interest in literacy and adult education

- Good listening and speaking skills in English

- Friendly, punctual and reliable

- Have an open mind and believe that all people can learn

Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutors at Centre for Community Learning and Development (CCL&D) are required to take attend a Tutor Orientation.
