Annual General Meeting 2nd October 2012

Treasurer’s Report

Year Ended 30 June 2012

Our financial position at the end of this year was a negative of ($2,201.73). Major contributing factor

to the result was the increased expense associated with the operating of some Central Zone events.

Whilst some events remain healthy the financial reports clearly reflect that the cost of operating these

events has increased over time. Our balance sheet though is in an extremely healthy position as we

head towards our major milestone event of the State Horse Trials.

Major changes:

· Income has increased by 11.4%

· Expenses has increased by 32.7%

· Bank Interest on Investments has declined 39.6%

In the preceding 12 months we have reviewed several areas to ensure that there is a balance

between what is being receipted and what is being paid out and we have continued to improve our

systems during this process.

Major Reviews:

· Certificate Testing rate for both Riders & Assessors have been reviewed with the welcome

assistance of Jenny Graham. Compensation for Assessors has been reviewed to ensure it is in

line with PCAV rates and Assessors are being correctly (if not partially) compensated for their

time and travel when assessing riders within Central Zone. Rider rates have been reviewed to

ensure that we can cover the costs incurred in Certificate Assessment.

· Cross Country Course Accreditation has been reviewed and Central Zone are subsidising Club

Horse Trial events by ensuring that Course Accreditors are able to claim travel costs for Club

visits via Central Zone.

· EFT Payments and Receipts have been implemented.

· Online Saver account has been opened.

· Bank security issues have been rectified.

We were again successful being awarded a government grant of $500.00 for the purpose of travel

costs within the zone.

Looking forward we do not expect another negative results until the State Horse Trials and believe we

will maintain our healthy balance sheet position during 2013.

Central Zone Report 2011 – 2012

It is very pleasing to report that the overall number of members in central zone has increased substantially this year. Even clubs which are suffering from further suburban encroachment are maintaining their numbers and those which are more rural or have assured agistment are looking very healthy. We hope that the state-wide decline in numbers which we have seen over recent years has started to reverse.

Despite increasing demands on the time of our riders, as well as their parents, who are the chauffeurs, strappers and sponsors, they have enthusiastically participated in the various club, zone and state scheduled events.

Central Zone had 33 club events in the last 12 months, 7 of which were horse trials, plus 5 zone events. Sadly it was necessary to cancel the Zone Gymkhana and a few club events due to the wet conditions. (The drought seems a distant memory.) Some of the great personal and team achievements in the zone over the past year were:

Presidents Cup – (showjumping series). Winners were:

PB - Jordan Childs (Tullamarine) on Langarra

PC - Adriana Boyle (Macedon) on Coco
PD -Maddison Buckner (Williamstown) on Jill

PE - Olivia O'Riley (Macedon) on Half Moon Beetles Choice

PF - Beth Codling (Gisborne) on Willow in the Mist

State Dressage and Showjumping: In the dressage, despite the rain, our dressage riders and their horses were undeterred and performed lovely tests. Grade 1 was an individual competition, with Mathew Sievers, Lucy Gunn and Francesca Titchener representing the zone. Mathew and Lucy officially came 2nd and 3rd respectively. However, the overall winner was from NSW, so Mathew and Lucy were the best in Victoria. The grade 2 team, comprising Alex Edwards, Tayla Desmet and Nicola Fitzgerald blitzed the competition. Not only did the team win, but Alex won overall, and Tayla came second. A great effort. The grade 3 team, Olivia Fynmore-Green, Lily Cowburn and Issy Luxmore, were the littlest and cutest at the Champs, but they also rode excellently, to fully deserve their 2nd place.

In the showjumping, the first event, one round followed by a jump-off, was held on Saturday afternoon in scorching heat. The B grade team, Kristen Lenne, Paige Cartwright, Tahnee Pfeiffer and Aimee Bush, started very well, winning the class. The C grade team, Paige Cartwright, Kelsey Pfeiffer, Natasha Londregan and Teegan Burke all jumped clear/clear in a very competitive field, to come 4th on times. On Sunday, it rained most of the day and the going on the grass for C grade became quite slippery. The girls all worked hard but there were a few too many rails and they missed out on 6th place by 3 points. The B grade team continued their winning run to come first in the one-round stakes. Sadly, Kristen's horse pulled up lame, and the team was down to 3. The team weren't successful in the 2-round championship but had enough points from the two earlier events to place 6th.

State Horse Trials: Reminiscent of last year, it was again cold and very wet underfoot on Sunday afternoon for the 10 Central Zone riders who competed in the State Horse Trials Championships at Baxter, hosted by South Metro Zone.

Two Grade 2 riders won and one placed in their respective sections: Sarah French (Riddells Creek) 1st, Lauren Peters (Oaklands) 1st and Tahnee Pfeiffer (Woodend) 6th. The Oaklands team placed 3rd.

The other riders had mixed success but I’m sure they all enjoyed riding over the challenging course at Baxter.

State Games, Flat Teams and Musical Ride. In keeping with a tradition of at least the last ten years, the zone was again represented by two Macedon games teams. The third position was filled by Oaklands. Macedon were disappointed that their B team missed out on a ribbon on a count-back, as it was the final year for their senior rider Sam Ferrari. Sam will be missed as Captain and mentor for the younger riders but will undoubtedly continue to contribute to the Pony club movement at club and zone level. However, Macedon and Central Zone still had cause to celebrate as the Macedon flamenco team won the Musical Ride. The Kyneton Musical Ride team, who came in as our reserve team, made good use of the time between the qualifiers and the state champs to polish their performance and gained second place. In the flat Team of Four event, Riddells Creek came fifth.

Central Zone Inter-Club Horse Trials: In the second year of this zone event, Kyneton was chosen as the venue, and with contributions from the zone and the hard work of the Kyneton organising committee, the aging cross-country course was renovated to a high standard. Perhaps it was home-ground advantage, but Kyneton were the proud winners of the Equestrian Club Supplies shield.

Interzone Horse Trials: This year we entered 3 grade 3 teams, 3 grade 4 teams and 2 composite riders in each grade. Our riders enjoyed the camaraderie of camping together at Yarrambat despite various mishaps over the weekend. Our best result was with the Central Power team which placed fifth.

A big thank you to Nick Ednie, the zone coordinator and to all the parents who contributed as Team Managers and volunteer workers. The event couldn’t go ahead without you.

Speed To Safety Training Days and Qualifiers: Following the invitation from Racing Victoria to sponsor a championship in riding to a given pace, called the Speed To Safety Championship, we organised three training days, which also served as qualifiers for the final. The first of these was held at Kyneton racecourse and the last two at the prestigious Flemington racecourse. We were fortunate that we could benefit from the expertise of retired jockey Greg Childs, who is one of our zone parents. Greg worked closely with Lisa Coffey, the Racing Victoria workforce development officer to train and monitor the 20 riders from 8 clubs who participated. Riders were placed on each of the 3 days to gain overall placings and were also awarded points for their club. Werribee were proud to be the first club to win the CZ Speed To Safety Shield. The riders selected to compete in the grade 3/4 section of the final at Moonee Valley are Samantha Simkins (Gisborne), Skye Kennedy (Kyneton) and Rachel Butler (Oaklands). We hope these training days will become annual fixtures as the riders not only gain the useful skill of track riding for racing, but also the general improvement in their ability to ride at a given pace should be of benefit in riding in cross-country events.

Clinics, Club Visits and Certificates

During the year we have had a variety of clinics and workshops covering each of the disciplines. Club visits by the DCI/ZA panel have been maintained and panel members are pleased with the standard of instruction and morale within the clubs. However, there has been concern expressed with the inexperience of gearcheckers, both at club and competition level, and several gearchecking clinics have been held, with more planned, to address this problem.

The two formal examining dates for C certificate each year has continued to work well, after some adjustments of the dates. More than 60 riders have attained their C certificate again this year and the preparation of candidates has shown some improvement. We have started a system of providing feedback to clubs that identifies general areas for improvement across their candidates. We look forward to seeing if this provides clubs with assistance in knowing what areas need greater support when preparing for this certificate. We also now have several riders working on their C*, K and B certificates and a clinic and information day has been planned. Participation in the higher certificates is being actively encouraged at club level, with further information evenings planned for different geographic parts of the zone.

I would like to thank the Central Zone Executive, DCI/ZA panel, clubs, members, parents and volunteers for their on-going support and friendship. The members of the Zone Executive, consisting of President Sue Hollins, Vice President Liz Turner, Secretary Lu Marciniak, Treasurer Jen Waldhauser and ZCI Ruth Feltoe have worked as an efficient and close-knit team for a few years. Some have indicated that they would like to retire and I would like to express my gratitude for all the hard work over the previous years. Whatever transpires at the next CZ AGM, I look forward to another successful year in Central Zone.
