1.  COURSE:

Architecture 1: Architectural Practice

1 hour 24 minutes lecture per session

2.  CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

This course is an introduction to construction techniques and working drawings. This course will cover the preparation of drawings for a small residential, light wood-framed structure. It will include conventions used in architectural drawing and code requirements. This course will also cover the basic history of architecture and students will explore the changes that have taken place over time.

3.  PREREQUISITES: None

4.  EXPECTED OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES:

This course is designed to introduce the student to the concepts, practices, standards and drafting techniques needed for architectural design. Students learn both the content and skills necessary to become a drafter in the field of architecture.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1.  Use various drafting tools.

2.  Read and use standard dimensioning techniques.

3.  Visualize spatial relationships, use architectural scales and symbols

4.  Draw floor plans and use those plans to construct all four elevations for a single story house.

5.  Students will be able to identify today’s current construction trends and how they differ from past practices.

5.  COMMUNICATION

·  In general, I’ll be in my office or in the Drafting lab during my office hours, but parents can call or e-mail me to set up an appointment if needed.

·  Please email me if you have any questions or your student is experiencing problems with the class, which may cause delay in submitting their assignments on time.

·  When you email me, make sure you insert the class name and your student’s name in the subject line. For example, in my case it will read: Arch Drafting 1-Lance Tatro
that would help me sort out the messages and avoid delays in responding to you.

6.  MATERIALS

LACK OF APPROPRIATE DRAFTING EQUIPMENT WILL CAUSE STUDENT TO FALL BEHIND

·  The textbook and drafting equipment are available from me (Central High) or Office Depot, Allard’s or Aaron Brother’s.

·  Drafting boards and parallel bars are available for your use in the drafting labs.

·  Keep in mind, however, that they are only available for limited hours, so it is best to do most of your work during class time.

Class tools will be provided. However, tool sets can be obtained from the instructor for a donation of $25.00 These tools will be for you to use only and to keep.

Also, try to develop camaraderie with your classmates and support one another. You are not competing with each other; try to think of yourselves as a team. Offer suggestions and share your insights with your classmates (short of having them do your assignments, of course!)
