A Message from the Principal

Central Avenue is one of eight elementary schools in the Franklin Pierce School District. Central Avenue Elementary received the School of Distinction Award from 2009-2012. In 2014, Central Avenue received the Washington State Academic Achievement Award for improvement in math and reading for students who are English Language Learners.

As a former Title I school and as part of our School Improvement Plan (SIP), the Central Avenue planning process brings together families, the community and school staff to consider strategies that will improve academic achievement for all students. One such strategy has been our school-wide Safe and Civil School effort. At the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, we explicitly taught the Common Area expectations to all students. For several years now, we have implemented a common language for voice levels, expectations for hands, feet, objects, mouth and eyes and our core values: Central Avenue Wildcats CARE (cooperation, accountability, respect and effort). Monthly CARE assemblies honor those students who exhibit the CARE traits. We also acknowledged the appropriate behaviors students show each and every day.

A second strategy is to provide targeted assistance in the areas of reading and math, to support students identified as most at risk of struggling on the state’s assessments. Our reading and math specialists and trained paraeducators provided additional support to students in grades K-5.

On Time, Every Day, Ready to Learn continues to be our focus. It is clear if students are in school on time every day, the likelihood of them being successful is greatly increased. Students who learn the habits early of being on time, and coming to school ready to learn every day will have better post school outcomes.

Finally, we recognize the vital role parents play in their child’s education. We offer evening, morning and during school opportunities to involve parents as partners with us in their child’s education. If you have any suggestions or ideas that will help us reach all parents please contact the school.

Parent Involvement

During 2015-16, parents were very active at Central Avenue. We had more than 175 parent volunteers who logged over 1100 hours assisting in various classrooms. They also helped chaperone field trips and with special events such as field day, AR celebration and outdoor education. All volunteers are required to complete a WA State Patrol background check. Contact Sue DuCharme at Central Avenue for further volunteer information.

Building Usage

Central Avenue was remodeled in 2000 to modernize the facility and to meet earthquake and fire/safety codes. The remodel included wiring for computer equipment in every classroom. The school includes 14 classrooms, twelve portables, a gym, library/computer lab, and cafeteria. All of which are used daily. Our campus also includes wonderful playgrounds to both the east and west of the school buildings. Central Avenue facilities are heavily used by the community for activities such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, athletics, PTA, and community meetings.
