Center for Montessori Teacher Education – Lower Elementary Program, Ages 6-9
The Center for Montessori Teacher Education offers the following accredited program which, upon successful completion and providing the student has a Bachelors Degree, leads to an American Montessori Society (AMS) Lower Elementary Credential, one of the most highly esteemed Montessori teaching credentials in the world.
LOCATION:
The program will be held at The New School, Inc. A MontessoriCenter for Children, in the general Raleigh, North Carolina area, which offers a peaceful atmosphere in a country setting. Students find this conducive to concentrated study and meditation.
ACADEMIC PHASE:
Phase I
June 23 – July 16, 2008
These 360 hours will cover the classic cosmic Montessori Elementary Curriculum for ages 6 – 9, with additional emphasis on successful class management to meet the needs of the American child.
Any candidate who currently does not hold a Montessori Early Childhood Credential is required to take a 45 hour Overview of this level of Montessori teacher preparation. This Overview will be given in Cary, North Carolina at Heartwood Montessori the week of June16 – 20, 2008 at the cost of $300.00. This Overview will be repeated in the summer of 2009.
An additional 240 hours of Montessori Elementary Curriculum for ages 9 – 12 will be offered in 2009 – 2010 at a cost of $4,250.00 for Center students or $4,450.00 for students with Elementary teacher preparation from another program. The additional $200.00 covers student assessment and re-mediation and any necessary overlapping work up to 10 hours class time. It is not possible to take both the 6 – 9 and the 9 – 12 courses at the same time. Details of these calendars are available upon request.

PRACTICUM PHASE:
(INTERNSHIP)
The 1080 hours of paid student teaching experience of nine (9) months can take place in 2008 – 2009 in an approved school. You may choose from a large variety of locations and schools. Our students are warmly welcomed because of their level of competence and the quality of their teacher preparation.
During the year an area representative of the Center will serve as a supportive Consulting Teacher and classroom observer of the student. Our seminars offer frequent contact with program staff and the opportunity for discussion and feedback with fellow interns and other Montessorians. The Center works closely with each student, the school, Supervising Teacher and Consulting Teacher so as to provide a complete and through educational experience.

The Center offers a Deferred Payment Plan, which allows students to make monthly payments. The Deferred Payment Plan for the Lower Elementary course requires students to put a down payment of $3,300.00 before the course begins and the balance of the tuition is carried with a 6% interest.
FEES:
AMS & CERTIFICATION
The Center is responsible for $250.00 (listed above) toward AMS and MACTE fees. These fees entitle the student to an AMS intern membership in the Society for two years and covers credential fees for one level. An additional fee of $400.00 should be budgeted for materials and their fabrication.
BOOKS AND SUPPLIES
Books and supplies are the responsibility of the student. A required reading list is sent as early as possible so readings can be completed and assimilated. As stated above, an additional $400.00 should be budgeted for materials and their fabrication.

PRESENTERS:
Presenters for each area are chosen for their expertise in that specialist area. The experienced staff includes Catherine Beemer, Wanda Johnson, Russell Long, JoAnne Long, India Adams, Warren McPherson, Shaun Gerson, Ceres Schroer York and Diana Zellner.
Ceres Schroer York, Director of the North Carolina program has been involved with AMS since 1963; her experience includes the founding of three Montessori schools in Illinois, New York and North Carolina. Ceres Schroer York holds both an AMS Early Childhood and Elementary credential as well as Master Degrees in Mathematics and Liberal Studies and has been a Montessori Classroom teacher since 1969. As a Mathematics specialist, Ceres Schroer York is known as a Montessori teacher educator and AMS seminar workshop presenter. Ceres Schroer York is involved nationally with the AMS Teacher Education Committee. She is experienced with both school and teacher program consultation and accreditation and AMS teacher preparation for children from birth to 12 for both public and private schools. During the year, Ceres Schroer York is Program Director of the Center’s Infant and Toddler, Early Childhood and Elementary Montessori Teacher Education programs as well as a consulting teacher for interns and Head of her own school in Apex, North Carolina.
