Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and Sciences

Request for Bridge Funding

Background: A major goal of The Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and Sciences (CCDS) is to promote cardiovascular research. CCDS investigators face increasing competition for limited research dollars and the loss of research funding. Research programs on campus have been negatively impacted, including the loss of key personnel, resources and scientific continuity. The allocation of CCDS resources to support bridging grants to faculty will advance the research mission of the CCDS and facilitate faculty retention and recruitment at LSU Health Shreveport.

Qualifications: Faculty members with research programs relevant to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease with $75,000 or less in funds available, from any source, to support his/her research program at the time of application submission are eligible to apply.

Funding Period: Bridge fund awards are intended to support the applicant’s research program for one (1) year. A second year of support (up to $75,000) may be available based upon the Center’s review of the applicant’s progress during the first year of support. Bridge grant funds will be disbursed from the Malcolm Feist Endowment into a separate account for the faculty member. Once disbursed, bridge funds will not expire. However, if the faculty member receives research support from another source (extramural or intramural) and bridge funds remain, the balance in the bridge fund must be returned to the CCDS effective with the start date of the additional support. In the event the faculty member terminates his/her employment with LSU Health Shreveport, any remaining bridge funds must be returned to the CCDS.

Budget: Applicants may request a maximum of $75,000. A one-year budget and justification (1 page) for the amount requested should be included with the application. Bridge funds may not be used for faculty (PI) salary.

Submission: Applications for bridge grants will be accepted during the standard CCDS Spring (July 1 start date) and Fall (January 1 start date) application cycles. Requests should include the following components: 1. Letter from the applicant’s department chair describing the faculty member’s need for bridge funding and verifying the applicant has $75,000 or less in funds available, from any source, to support the applicant’s research laboratory; 2. One page introduction from the applicant describing the research goals to be accomplished during the one-year period of bridge support and a statement as to how this funding will increase chances of future funding; 3. One-year budget and justification for the amount requested (as described above); 4. Copy of the applicant’s most recent peer-reviewed grant submission and, if applicable, copies of the reviewers’ critiques and any rebuttal; and, 5. Copy of the applicant’s CV and other support. If the initial petition for support is not successful, the applicant may revise the petition once and resubmit the request for consideration during the next application cycle. Submit all application materials to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSPTT) AND to the CCDS ().

Evaluation: The CCDS will review all bridge grant requests. Priority for funding will be based upon the qualifications of the applicant, relevance of the proposed research to cardiovascular/cerebrovascular disease and the overall mission of the CCDS, and availability of funds to support the bridge grant program.
