Centennial High School National Honor Society

Congratulations, you are academically eligible for membership in the Centennial chapter of the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 as an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while developing characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. The ideals of scholarship, character, service, and leadership remain relevant today. Through NHS service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities upon which the organization was founded. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment.

In order to be considered you complete the application and return it to the chapter collection box in Student Services by 2:30 PM on Thursday, October 3, 2013. All applications must be typed. Signatures from advisors/coaches are required to validate your application. No application will be considered without the required signatures.

The selection procedure as determined by the faculty council in accordance with the National Council is as follows:

  1. Academic records are reviewed to determine academic eligibility. A cumulative weighted GPA of 3.40 is required at the end of sophomore year and junior year. This GPA is set by the HCPSS.
  2. A completed, typed application with all required signatures must be returned by Thursday, October 3.
  3. All faculty members are invited to make comments on prospective members. Members of the faculty council who have been appointed by the principal will make the actual selections.
  4. Students must be involved with both school and community activities and service. These activities must be ongoing throughout the year and show a balance of types of activities.

Students who complete all requirements, receive positive faculty approval, and receive a majority vote of the faculty council will be “tapped” and invited into the National Honor Society at an evening ceremony for parents, students, and friends in January. A yearly fee of $20 must be paid to the chapter adviser, Mrs. Bagley at the first meeting.

Once accepted into the NHS students must meet these requirements:

  1. All students must maintain a minimum 3.40 weighted GPA checked by the chapter advisor.
  2. Members are required to participate in 2 NHS sponsored events totaling approximately 8 hours for each quarter.
  3. Attendance at the general membership meetings is mandatory and must be verified by the group leader. Meeting dates will be available on the website and reminders will be announced over the PA. If the student cannot attend a meeting, an absence form must be submitted and approved at least 24 hours prior to the meeting by Mrs. Bagley. Additional service hours will be assigned. If two meetings are missed, the NHS faculty council may deem this grounds for dismissal.
  4. The student must maintain a clean disciplinary record and abide by all “Requirements for Membership in Good Standing” which will be distributed at the first meeting and must be signed by both student and parent.
  5. Each student is expected to participate in our one fundraising activity for the year and provide a service item or an item of a minimum value of $20 to the NHS auction. Members are encouraged to work together as a team to provide a service.

Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. It is a commitment of your time and energy. Night meetings, participation in service activities and activities of the chapter are expected. In addition, students selected for membership are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, character, leadership, and service and will be regularly reviewed by faculty members.

Important Information about Completing the Application

On the following pages, list organizations, clubs, or activities at Centennial High School and in the community where you are an active and ongoing member.

•Do not list activities that you did only once or occasionally. These should be activities that you have been involved in while in high school.

•Do not list organizations that you intend to join this year but are not currently a member, however if you are continuing this year, make sure to check off the current year.

•Do not list classes such as journalism, drama, or band. However, if you go above and beyond class requirements (running lights for school shows, playing concerts at nursing homes), you may list these.

•You may list religious activities such as teaching a class, but do not list attendance at youth group or church services. You may also list summer service trips that were part of an organized program.

For each activity indicate how often you met (weekly, monthly) and about how many hours you worked for the year. Describe your contribution to the organization and what you have learned from your participation.

On the last page you must provide at least one example of a leadership position you have held in one of the activities. If you have not held a leadership position then please describe a time when you assumed a leadership role in an event or school activity. You must have your coach, sponsor, or teacher sign the school and community activity and leadership position forms.

Sincerely,

Michelle Bagley
