Cell Unit Study Guide

Across

3. The scientist who was first to use the term cells

7. This part of cell protects the nucleus; allows only certain material in and out

9. Something is alive if it is made up of these

10. The cell’s recycler; breaks down worn out products to be used by the cell

11. The part of the cell that creates the protein which is the product of the cell

Down

1. An animal’s cell city limits or outer layer; surrounds an animal cell

2. The cells’ transportation system; similar to roads

4. The part of the cell that packs and carries; similar to the post office

5. The cell’s powerhouse; supplies most of the energy for cells

6. Cells were first discovered because of the invention of this instrument

8. The cell’s computer or brain; uses DNA to regulate all activities of the cell

UNIT STUDY GUIDE FOR CELLS

Be able to explain, define and/or apply the following words and concepts.

Word /  / Explanation
System / A combination of things or parts that make a whole
Structure / Parts of a system
Function / Refers to the job or purpose of the structure
Cell / Basic unit of life, smallest part of living things
Organism / A living thing
Cell Theory / A general statement in biology that all living things consist of cells, which came from previously existing cells
Robert Hook / Hooke had discovered dead plant cells in a piece of cork with a microscope that he created
Organelles / Tiny structures that make up the insides of a cell
Five Organelles to Know:
Cell Wall / The firm nonliving layer that surrounds and supports most plant cells.
Cell Membrane / The outside layer surrounding the contents of a cell, it allows materials in and out of the cell (like a fence). It is semipermeable (see below).
Nucleus / The nucleus controls many of the functions of the cell, like a command center
Nuclear membrane / The outside layer of the nucleus, protects the genetic materials inside the nucleus and allows materials in and out of the nucleus.
Chloroplasts
/ Use energy from the sun to make food for the plant through photosynthesis, by containing the chlorophyll needed for the chemical reaction of photosynthesis.
Differentiate between plant and animal cells / Plant cells have a cell wall (for support), chloroplasts (which contain the chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis), which are not found within animal cells
Semipermeable / Membrane allowing certain substances to pass through it but not others
Other organelles for enrichment:
Vacuoles / Storage bubbles found in cells
Mitochondria / The cell’s powerhouse; supplies most of the energy for cells
Lysosomes / The cell’s recycler; breaks down worn out products to be used by the cell
Golgi bodies / The part of the cell that packs and carries
