Cell Concept and Organelle Analogies

An easy method to remembering the structure and function of cellular organisms is to create an analogy for that organelle. In each analogy the structure and function of an organelle can be related to something that is familiar and therefore should make it easier to remember. To better enhance the learning process of analogies, one can create a cell concept to go along with their analogies. A cell concept involves relating each analogy to a larger concept or topic. This will allow you to not only better understand the structure and function of each organelle, but will also demonstrate how each of these organelles may interact with each other. See the example below.

Cell concept: The cell is like the human body.

Analogy: The nucleus of a cell is like the human brain because the nucleus is the control center of a cell and the brain is the control center of a human.

Project Directions:

·  Each group (2 students) is responsible for designing one cell concept and fourteen organelle analogies.

§  Each partner will be held responsible for creating 7 organelle analogies; however, both partners are responsible for recording all 14 analogies.

·  Each analogy must be written out and explained in detail relating to both the structure and function of each organelle.

·  Each group will create a poster representing the cell concept. Each organelle analogy must be represented in the poster diagram. Each group will present their concept to the class explaining each of their analogies.

·  Your teacher must approve all cell concepts before you begin with your analogies. There can be no repeats within a class.

Organelles: Create an analogy for the following 14 cellular organelles

Partner 1: ______

Cell Membrane

Mitochondria

Ribosomes

Endoplasmic Reticulum

Lysosomes

Cytoskeleton

Nucleus

Partner 2: ______

Cell Wall

Golgi Apparatus

Cilia and Flagella

Nucleolus

Vacuoles

Chloroplast

Cytoplasm

Grading: This project is worth a total of 35 points:

Analogies = 28 points (4 points per analogy)

·  3 pts – Description of the function of the organelle and an explanation of the relationship between its function and the analogy concept’s function.

·  1 pt – Organelle analogy represented on the poster.

Presentation = 7 points

·  3 pts – Poster is colored, neat, and is readable

·  2 pts – Analogies are labeled

·  2 pts – Cell analogies fit within the concept presented

Directions: Complete the following graphic organizer for your selected cell concept. Each partner is responsible for recording the analogies for every organelle. Remember that all concepts must be approved by your teacher. An example has been done for you.

Example: A cell is like the human body.

Organelle: / Analogy: / Rationale:
Nucleus / Brain / A nucleus controls the cell and the brain controls the body.
