Algebra I

Celeste DeAngelo

Welcome to Algebra I class at St. Joseph Catholic School! I am excited to have the opportunity to teach you mathematics and to prepare you for future math classes.

In Algebra I this year, we will study about expressions, equations, and functions. We will study linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, and systems of linear equations and inequalities. We will learn about exponential functions and equations, quadratic functions and equations, radical functions and equations, and rational functions and equations. We will touch on statistics and probability as well.

Materials:

Notebook, pencils, manila folder, jumbo book cover or paper book cover, one package of copy paper, and a calculator (TI83 graphing calculator, TI84 graphing calculator, or TI Inspire graphing calculators are preferred,)

Grades:

Students will have major tests each nine week period and will be given homework assignments daily. I give quizzes to make sure students are keeping up with their lessons. Absent students are required to make up all assignments and grades. If they are absent, there will be makeup work. Students should inquire about their work the day they return to class if they did not find the assignment on Power School. It is very important to keep up in mathematics. Students can come to me for help after school if they are behind. Any assignment not made up in three days will receive a zero unless the student had an extended illness or discusses the matter with me individually. All assignments have deadlines. When students know they will miss class, they should get their assignment before they miss rather than after they miss class. Assignments are on Power School each day.

Grades will be put on power grade within a week (or sooner) if the assignment is turned in on the assigned day. All grades can be viewed by looking on Power School.

I grade on a point system where each assignment is graded with the number of correct points over the number of possible points. Tests and projects are worth more points than homework and daily grades. To average a grade, I add the total number of correct points and divide by the total number of possible points.

If a student fails a major test, the student is required to come after school for tutoring and then retake the test outside of class. This must be done in no more than a week.

Rules:

Students must bring their book, pencils, paper, and homework to class each day. Students are tardy to class when they are not seated in their assigned seats when the bell rings. Everyone in the classroom is to be treated with dignity and respect. All school rules will be followed in the classroom. Students must be recognized before speaking or moving about the room. There will be no loud talking. Students are to be prepared to begin class as soon as the bell rings. Students may not go to their lockers or to the restroom during class time. Students are not to touch anything on or in the teacher’s desk, the air-conditioner controls, or the telephone without permission. All students must participate in class activities. Students are expected to raise their hands to ask questions. Students are not to chew gum, eat, or drink in class.

Tutoring:

All students can come to me for tutoring during break or after school when I am not on duty. I will be glad to work with students individually when they need me.

Parents:

Please call the school anytime you have a question for me, or email me on Power School. Students thrive when they know their parents are checking on their progress.

Please read this policy and have your parents read it also. Detach and sign the slip below showing the teacher you have read and understand the policy. The slip should be returned tomorrow. Keep this sheet in your notebook for reference during the school year.

I have read and understand the policy for Algebra I for the 2017-2018 school year.
