CSI Strategic Planning 2008-2012

“Celebrating Our Past, Charting Our Future”

I would like to take this opportunity to update the campus community on our strategic planning process which will establish the direction for the College over the next five years. Stakeholder input will be very important throughout the planning process. We have been and continue to seek input. We created an online survey that was open to students, faculty, staff, and community members. The online survey was widely advertised through mass e-mail, CSI website, The Times-News, KMVT, and the Chamber of Commerce weekly newsletter.

We received 451 responses to our online survey:

·  339 current students

·  97 faculty and staff

·  15 community members

Although I was hoping for more responses from the community, we have to keep in mind that most of our students, faculty and staff are also community members. Feedback from the survey will be carefully analyzed and considered during the development of our 2008-2012 Strategic Plan.

The survey results showed support for continued growth and expansion of courses, programs and delivery methods (online, evening, off-campus centers, telecommunications, etc.), as well as student services. Respondents ranked the following items as important over the next five years:

·  Quality of education ranked highest in importance (91% of our students consider it Very Important and 9% consider it Important).

·  Cost of tuition and fees also ranked high in importance (84% of student respondents ranked it Very Important; 15% ranked it Important).

·  Availability of financial aid (78% Very Important, 19% Important) and scholarships (79% Very Important, 17% Important) also ranked very high.

·  Respondents also expressed the importance of evening classes (89% considered it Very Important or Important), online courses (88% said that the availability of online courses is Very Important or Important).

·  An overwhelming majority of student respondents (95%) agree that the “Availability of more bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Twin Falls” is Very Important (81%) or Important (14%).

·  71% of student respondents agreed that the availability of fully online programs is Very Important or Important.

I truly appreciated the time respondents took to answer open ended questions. The following are some sample comments and suggestions:

·  “CSI values its students.”

·  “CSI’s faculty and staff are always willing to work with anybody who walks through their doors. They are there and ready to work with you to provide the experience and education that you desire.”

·  “Our future students will be more globally-oriented; their interests more diverse and farreaching. We need to expand our walls and horizons.”

·  “Prepare students for ever-changing technology. Prepare students for changing career requirements by emphasizing learning how to learn...”

·  “Stay on top of technological developments, both to be prepared to offer the appropriate degree programs, and to incorporate the technology as needed into the classroom and online environment. Maintain a focus on developing those programs which will enable students to go forward and succeed in their further educational efforts and in their lives.”

On October 15th 110 student, faculty, staff, and administration representatives met at the Herrett Center for a day-long visioning and strategic planning exercise. The day included presentations, a panel discussion, and collaborative planning exercises. Participants heard about and examined future trends (opportunities and threats) which might impact CSI. They revisited the College’s mission, values and vision statements, as well as its philosophy and purposes.

The next step is to convene a Strategic Planning Committee which will help develop the draft plan. The process will involve ample opportunity for additional input and discussion. The draft will be shared with everyone on campus and stakeholder input will be sought. Based on that input, the Committee will make any necessary revisions, and the final draft will be presented to the Board of Trustees for their review and approval.

I would like to thank students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members who have chosen to participate to date, and would like to encourage everyone to be involved in this very important process.

Who Are “They” Anyway?

Are we using the language of a winner or a whiner? Join this PACE workshop and find out how blaming “them” affects teamwork, hurting both the team and the individuals in it. We will learn to shift from an attitude of blame-find to an attitude of solution-finding. While working in teams we will increase our initiative, innovation, and creativity!

Sign up early each section is limited to 25 people. This training will have PRIZES. You have to be signed up and attend both classes in your group to be eligible for the prize. If you have any questions, please contact Tina Standlee x6205.

Who Are ‘They’ Anyway? “Who’s responsible?” The typical answer is “they” are! But just who are “they” anyway.

Dealing with Change

·  Be proactive in finding ways to make change work for you, rather than against you.

·  Help yourself see positive aspects to organizational change and how it can benefit you.

Personal Accountability and Teamwork

·  Would you liked to be Proactive rather the Reactive?

·  Be able to bounce back from defeat, setbacks, or adversity and continue moving toward goals, rather than surrendering to despair.

·  Be task-focused rather than turf-protecting.

My name is Silvia Renova-Gaxiola, I am 26 years old. I am originally from a little town in East Idaho called Hamer, I graduated from West Jefferson High School in 2000! After taking three years off of school you can imagine that I was terrified to go back to school. I came to CSI just looking for information on the school in the summer of 2003 and I haven’t left since. My love for CSI goes way back to when I first set foot in the Taylor building and met the wonderful staff here. I graduated from CSI in 2006, with an associate in Social Work. I then decided to change my major to Criminal Justice and transfer to Boise State; I was able to stay in Twin with my new husband Mike! I am scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2008, three more classes! I am super excited to be working at CSI, as I mentioned before this place gave me the home away from home and the love that I was seeking in 2003, and I am still feeling the love in 2007!

I was born and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, graduated from Twin Falls High School, received my AA in Psychology from CSI in 1990, and recently graduated with a BS in HRD from Idaho State University. After being widowed in 1980 I founded Widowed Wellness Programs of Idaho, Inc. I have facilitated widowed support groups for 26 years, most of them right here at the Office on Aging. I have one child, a daughter named Brandie, and three grandchildren: Ashton, Riyle and Ava. I look forward to working with everyone here at CSI. /

I grew up in Twin Falls many years ago. After high school I married and moved to Boise. My career took me from Boise to Tacoma, WA and then to Phoenix, AZ, where I retired in 2004. I returned to Twin last year and love everything about this area. I like the climate and I enjoy the many cultural events that are available to attend in this area. And I love that where ever I go the parking is a cinch-even here at CSI. ;) I am working in the Education Dept. office and love meeting all the wonderful people.

I am an Idahoan to the core, being born and raised in the little town of Rupert. In the spring of 2000, I received my A.A. in General Business from the College of Southern Idaho. I furthered my education at Idaho State University, where I received my B.B.A. in Finance in the spring of 2003. After this, I decided to spend a year and half overseas, teaching English as a Christian missionary in Ciechanow, Poland. Although I came home in January of 2005, I feel as though I now have some Polish blood in me! My journey continued from there, where I decided to pursue a professional career in banking as a management intern, and then eventually became a supervisor of a small branch. Now I am extremely excited to change my focus to something I am passionate about – mentoring and building relationships with students.
In my free time, I enjoy chatting with close friends over a great cup of coffee, playing tennis, traveling, camping/fishing, attending cultural events, and spending time with my family.
I have already felt so welcomed by everyone here, and I am thrilled to be a part of the C.S.I. team! /

I was born and raised on my family farm and ranch here in Twin Falls. I earned a B.S. in Agricultural Science and Technology from the University of Idaho where I met my husband, Brent. We have been living in Nampa the past six years where I worked for the University of Idaho Owyhee County Cooperative Extension System as the 4-H Program Coordinator. After my baby girl was born I started teaching for the Boise State University Adult Basic Education and Job Education Training program. My daughter, Chloe, is now two and a half; she, my husband and I moved back to Twin Falls this summer to be closer to my family. When not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and working my Pampered Chef business. I have a great appreciation for education and am really looking forward to working at CSI and with the Foundation.
