celebrate labor day at the george ranch historical park

with barbecue, historic games and homemade ice cream

RICHMOND – A national holiday since 1894, Labor Day was created to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of American workers. Visit the George Ranch Historical Park on Saturday, September 5 or Monday, September 7 to celebrate your three-day weekend with an old-fashioned barbecue, home-made ice cream and games from the 1930s.

All activities will take place at the 1930s George Home. Adults and kids can play games of the early 1900s, including life-size snakes and ladders, life-size jacks, life-size pickup-up sticks, badminton, hopscotch and more. Music from the 1930s will be playing on a reproduction record player and ice-cream making will take place from noon until 2 p.m. (Due to the churning process, the first batch of ice cream won’t ready until 12:30, though!)

“It’s going to be a very laid-back, casual day of family fun,” said Director of Programs Krystal Willeby.

Guests can also enjoy a historic lunch on both days under nearly 200-year-old oak trees at the 1930s George Home. “Cookie,” the chuckwagon chef, has prepared a Texas-sized menu for the celebration, including beef brisket, locally-made sausages, Mesquite con pollo, cowboy beans, potato salad, cole slaw and all the fixings. The historic meal takes place from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and costs $15 for adults and children over 13, $14 for seniors (62+), $12 for children ages five to 12 and $4 for children under four. Meal price does not include general admission to the Park and reservations are strongly recommended.

The George Ranch Historical Park will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. For more information, call (281) 343-0218 or visit www.georgeranch.org. To book a historic meal, call (281) 343-0218 x410 or go online to reserve a spot.
