What to do between dental visits to reduce problems?

When you are between dental visits, your oral health care is your responsibility. Here are some handy tips to help is maintaining a happy smile.

* Brush your teeth, mainly where the gum meets the tooth, regularly and gently for two minutes at a time in a circular motion, making sure to get those very back teeth. This way you can prevent gum disease, reduce decay and the circular action helps not wearing down the root surface of the tooth.

* Floss on a regular basis. When you don’t floss you can miss cleaning up to 33% of your tooth surfaces.

* Eat a healthier diet by trying to minimise the amount of sugar consumed

* Reducing snacking. “Grazing” puts your teeth under extra stress through added acid and sugar attacks

Dental Jokes

While I was waiting to see the dentist, a woman came out of his inner office smiling. Nodding to me, she said, "Thank goodness my work is completed. I'm so glad to have found a painless dentist and one who's so gentle and understanding too." When seated in the dentist chair, I related the incident to the doctor. He laughed and explained, "Oh that was just my Mother."

Sugar: Sweet nothings or harmful substance

Everyone knows eating too much sugar can lead to tooth decay, but few are aware of exactly how that happens.

The mouth is full of hundreds of bacteria, many of which are beneficial, however they all process the sugars you eat to create acids that destroy the tooth enamel. This causes holes in the teeth which slowly progress into the deeper layers of the tooth, causing pain and possible tooth loss.

Your teeth are frequently under attack by acids, but the good news is this damage is constantly being reversed. Acids leech minerals from the enamel through a process called demineralization. Fortunately, the natural process of remineralization helps repair the damage and strengthens the teeth all over again – and your saliva is a key player. Saliva contains minerals such as calcium and phosphates to help repair the teeth. So keep hydrated as saliva dries up quickly if you get thirsty!

Limiting your sugar intake is vital if you want to give your mouth a fighting chance to fix the damage. Don’t graze on sugary food and encourage your kids to limit their sugar intake. Brush away bacteria-filled plaque regularly and consume healthy foods that strengthen the teeth. Add regular dental visits to the mix to monitor for problems and you and your loved ones have the best shot at winning the battle against tooth decay.
