CCPTP Opening Business Meeting

Welcome and introductions-Marie Miville overviewed the conference and introduced the topic of leadership and the speakers.

Marie thanked various members for financial support of conference: Charlie Waehler and Cynthia Belar’s office for grant; New MexicoStateUniversity and Columbia Teacher’s College for their contributions.

Approval of minutes-minutes of business meeting from APA approved

Treasurer’s Report-Laurie Mintz summarized the budget and explained that she has been sorting out listserve membership and collecting dues for those who want to stay on listserve. New transferable account opened at Bank of America; e-manageable business account. Opened Certificate of Deposit which allows us to earn interest at rate of 4.22%. We hope to make a profit of about $1,000 on the conference.

Survey Report-John Dagley presented a few statistics from the survey but noted that only 28% have responded. In this sample 20% of applicants were placed in non APA approved internships. Question: What do we want to do with this survey? Is there a way to make this more attractive? We’re going to see if we can get aggregate data from APA. One idea: divide into 1/3s and ask one third every year. If not, perhaps TDs could forward the summary data they get back. Jim Lichtenberg indicated that CoA could provide data upon request from CCPTP. Suggestions: asksome of the non APA questions here at the conference; ask different -- more relevant and possibly topical--questions. John mentioned intention to form communications committee.

Website Update-Brian McNeill-Updated that we now have the capacity to do more with the website. It should be up soon. Please forward ideas to board about what you might like to see on the website. Marie asked for volunteers to serve on the committee that would oversee survey and website.

Awards -Changming distributed nomination forms for Outstanding Graduate Student Award and for Lifetime Contributions Award. Deadline for nominations for OGS is March 30 and for LCA is April 15. Asked for volunteers to serve on each committee. Need 3 general members for OGS and 2 general members for LCA.

Liason reports:

Education Directorate-Cynthia Belar : Major education & training award to Janet Helms at APA conference. APA adopted guidelines for undergraduate psychology majors. Approved a new COMMISSION on accreditation (replacing committee…) Paul Nelson retired. Catherine Grus and Claire Porac will assume related roles. APA online psychology lab useful for teaching undergrad psychology. Graduate Education in Psychology survey results. Benchmarks. Teaching of psychology. DVD to promote educational research. Zero tolerance policy. 2006 Leadership Conference focused on uses of assessment to promote learning (formative). Award to Sherry Benton. Reception for representative Rosa DeLauro whose message is that there is more money for education than we are told. Federal Education Advocacy Coordinators. Presented list of senators that need to be contacted by residents in those states for support of the GPE. New Education Advocacy Trust (EdAT) is an important way to give psychologists a voice.

SCP-Kathy Bieshke- Approved system for online submissions to TCP. Exec Board approved a new section on animal human interaction. By-law change: Student seats on certain SCP committees for which they’re eligible.

2008 CP International Conference- Laura Palmer & Linda Forrest- Mar 6-9 2008 Chicago Hilton & Towers.

  • Reminder bookmarks distributed. Need members’ help to identify encourage students and international colleagues to attend; maybe try to find $ to help. Less than 9% of members are under age 40 and mean age is 57 years. Program will target students and early career professionals. Format will include working groups which allow for continuity of work before during and after the conference. Need members help in identifying topics and shaping them. Fri and Sat morning will be set aside for working groups sponsored by sponsoring groups and will not complete with other programs. CCPTP will be responsible for several of those working groups.
  • The reminder bookmarks include 16 different languages and are meant to communicate the thrust for conceptualizing CP as having international reach. Will attempt to be relevant to practitioners.
  • Planning subgroups: Leg & advocacy, keynote, state assns, secondary sponsors, exhibitors, students, early career, social & hospitality, working groups, follow up and evaluation, awards, website, and local arrangements.
  • Advocacy- looking for a singular message that can be taken to particular legislators. Need help with that.
  • Need counseling psychology on every campus to be active with Federal Advocacy coordinators.
  • This is the 5th annual CP conference since 1951 and they have been getting closer together. A reason is that connecting with students is an important way to grow the division. Division 17 has been losing at rate of 10%. The few divisions that are growing hold annual conference.

ACCTA- Sherry Benton- Association of counseling center training agencies that have internship programs. Focus of conference next fall will be on competencies.ACCTA has their own clearinghouse and is a very good resource for students interested in CC internships.

APPIC- Karen Taylor-distributed handout. APPIC is a co-sponsor of International Conference. Expect that 400-600 students won’t match in this cycle.
