Cause for Concern Process

Cause for concern if : /
  • trainee does not exhibit personal and professional conduct
  • tutor or mentor is concerned that their trainee will not achieve at least Grade 3 (Working at the minimum standard)by the end of MP1, at least working above the minimum level by the end of SP2 andat leastgood by the end of the third placement (MP3) in the teaching standards which are being targeted.

Step 1 /
  • At the earliest opportunity the teacher tutor informs the mentor and together they discuss the cause(s) for concern with the trainee and agree targets on an action plan, which are focused explicitly on areas for improvement.
  • Maximum of 3 targets recorded.
  • Targets are SMART with agreed success criteria. Copy given to SCITT manager.
  • Timescale of 2 weeks given until review point.
  • Complete and send cause for concern form which can be downloaded from Partnership log in area on website to SCITT manager.
  • SCITT manager will visit and do an additional observation during 2 week period.
  • Extra support provided by placement school and SCITT manager

Step 2 /
  • If sufficient progress made by trainee, normal training routine continues.
  • If insufficient progress has been made: formal review meeting with trainee, SCITT manager, TT and mentor. Cause for concern agreed and explicit, revised SMART targets set.
  • All observations and meetings should focus on the cause for concern targets.
  • A period of 2 to 4 weeks is set for trainee to focus on the cause for concern targets.
  • Extra support provided by placement school and SCITT manager

Step 3 /
  • At end of the period, there is a formal review/observation.
  • If sufficient progress made by trainee, normal training routine continues.
  • If some progress made, cause for concern targets revised and a further 2 weeks given with extra support provided by placement school and SCITT manager
  • If insufficient of the targets have been met and progress has not been made, the trainee fails the placement/ training course or withdraws from the course.

Step 4 /
  • An exit interview is recorded and signed
  • Formal letter sent to trainee.

If a trainee is placed on step 1 or step 2 and succeeds in completing targets, normal training routine resumes. However, if there are further concerns later on in the programme, then it is possible that the trainee will go back on to the cause for concern process. In this case, if the issues necessitating the initiation of the process are the same as they were before, then the trainee will move onto either step 2 or step 3, depending on which step they were on previously. However, if the reason for the cause for concern is a result of new issues arising due for example to a change in placement, then the trainee should revert back to step 1.
