PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Youth Tutoring Program is an after-school educational enrichment program for at-risk first through twelfth grade students who live in five low- and mixed-income public housing communities in Seattle. Begun in 1991 as a partnership with the Seattle Housing Authority, the tutoring centers provide youth with a safe, positive, and stimulating environment to explore learning and experience academic and personal success

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervise, facilitate, and coordinate the after school and summer tutoring program for culturally diverse, at-risk students. Facilitate tutoring and relationship building between youth and volunteers.
  1. Manage daily center activities
  2. Grow, support and monitor relationships between students and volunteers
  3. Work with center and program staff to plan and implement student incentive and motivation system; work with supervisor to evaluate the effectiveness of the system on an ongoing basis
  4. Maintain organized and accessible learning materials and resources
  5. Help develop and implement new initiatives (i.e., implementation of online assessment system)
  6. Use YTP-developed assessment system to assess students in math and reading; use this information to develop learning goals and activities
  7. Help update and maintain relevant curriculum
  8. Foster an environment where youth and adults are treated with respect and care, and where learning is perceived to be fun, exciting and important
  9. Involve students and tutors in how the Center looks with displays and exhibits
  10. Lead small-group tutoring and homework help as needed

2. Supervise Tutoring Center Staff

  1. Recruit and interview applicants
  2. Train and supervise staff; provide ongoing supervision, coaching and timely feedback to employees; conduct evaluations of staff performance.

c. Assess specific training needs of staff; offer coaching and help identify trainings for staff.

  1. Recruit, train and supervise center volunteers in collaboration with the volunteer coordinator
  1. Provide ongoing support and guidance for center volunteers
  2. Guide volunteers with strengthening and growing their relationships with students
  3. Assist with recruitment efforts
  4. Provide center overview and orientation
  5. Match volunteer tutors with students
  6. Facilitate 2-3 on-site volunteer tutor trainings (Summer Reading Program, School Year kick off and mid-year)
  1. Work collaboratively with parents and teachers to create a support system that enables academic success for each student
  1. Involve parents through telephone, face-to-face or email contacts to develop ongoing communication and relationships that support each student’s learning success
  2. Contact schools and teachers on a regular basis to facilitate each student’s learning success
  1. Complete administrative work necessary for the on-going operation of the center
  1. Track student attendance and academic progress
  2. Make regular teacher, parent and community contacts
  3. Complete volunteer log
  4. Provide monthly narrative and statistical reports to the program management team
  5. Conduct annual surveys of parents, students and teachers
  1. Build and strengthen partnerships with parents, schools and community groups through visits, phone calls and written materials
  1. Collaborate with other community service providers located in the community to increase provider responsiveness to community needs
  2. Actively participate and represent YTP in community educational meetings, committees and forums
  1. Recruit, re-enroll and retain new students
  1. Work with partner organizations and on-site management and other service providers where applicable to promote YTP
  2. Call parents and students to remind them about their participation in YTP
  3. Create a stimulating learning environment for students and encouraging volunteer tutors in their relationships with their respective student.
  1. Assist in program development and evaluation.
  1. Develop and implement program activities for different services provided at the centers that are unique to the specific center population
  2. Participate in program assessments and peer problem solving
  3. Facilitate survey and other evaluation processes with students, parents, volunteers, teachers and community
  1. Assist youth with homework assignments, literacy enrichment, academic skill-building activities, higher education preparation and job preparedness
  1. When capacity permits, participate in and/or facilitate teen mentoring
  1. Develop and conduct small-group extracurricular activities for youth and develop and strengthen their assets
  1. Work with students and volunteers to develop small group activities that address their interests and encourage learning
  2. Schedule and conduct activities
  1. Be responsible for developing and supporting values of a culturally diverse work and learning environment
  1. Create and maintain a culturally rich, respectful and diverse learning environment
  2. Attend training to learn about students’ ethnic and racial cultures
  3. Work with volunteer tutors to educate them about their student’s ethnic/racial culture to maximize their effectiveness in achieving the student’s learning goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent number of years experience may substitute for education
  2. Two (2) years relevant classroom teaching experience (grades (2-12) or equivalent experience in after-school program
  3. Cultural competence in working with diverse students
  4. Experience working with at-risk youth
  5. Detailed oriented: demonstrated strong organizational and administrative skills
  6. Proven ability to work independently and lead staff and volunteers
  7. Strong classroom management skills
  8. Strong interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school, students, parents, community representatives and general public.
  10. WA State Driver’s License and on-going use of a vehicle
  11. Evening availability (Hours are M-TH 1130am-8pm and Fri 9am-530pm)
  12. Commitment to development and supporting values of a culturally divers work environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s in Education/Teaching Certification
  2. Bilingual
