What? If rural prompts a first thought of farming, please think again. Most Catholic parishes
include rural areas, often packed with commuters and retirees. Who lives in rural areas? Does
‘rural’ make a difference? Are there helpful religious approaches which can be made to scattered Catholics? 2016’s conference should include a look at the National Trust, and something on the racing industry.

Why? Most of each diocese is rural, yet traditionally the Bishop takes his title from a town. We try to bridge the gap. Small congregations are not failed larger churches, but God’s design for rural ministry.

Where? Malton in North Yorkshire. The Old Lodge Hotel, Maltongate, has beautiful but limited accommodation, so late bookings may well have to be housed down the road. The hotel is 10 minutes’ walk from Malton railway station.

When? The Conference begins at 4pm on Monday, 15 February 2016 and ends with lunch on Wednesday, 17 February.

Who? Any Catholic - clerical, religious, lay - interested enough to come is welcome. The majority of English and Welsh dioceses send representatives. Behind this conference are Fr Harry Doyle (Lancaster), Fr Tim Bywater (Middlesbrough), Fr Robert Miller and Deacon Vincent Woods
(Clifton). The CBCEW Bishop for Rural Issues is the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. Many of those attending return year after year, testifying to the value of these hours away.

How Much? Single rooms £235.00, double £ask. Non-residents £25.00 per half day includes lunch or dinner. Your booking form must be accompanied by your deposit, which is non-returnable if you cancel within 30 days of the conference. Cheques should be made in favour of Our Lady & St Michael Conference a/c. Many people who attend are subsidised by parish or diocese.
