Principal Designer of the Year

Category Description: PRINCIPAL DESIGNER OF THE YEAR

The Principal Designer is a role created under the CDM Regulations 2015. The judges will be looking for an individual or firm that embodies all of the duties this role entails but also goes that little bit further to further the principles of the Regulations. They should be able to show how they were fully engaged, added value to the whole process, their understanding of Design Risk Management, Buildability, Maintainability and Usability issues and how they were involved.

Sample of questions asked

  • If requested by the Client Provide evidence of how the Principal Designer has given sound and relevant advice to the Client during projects
  • Coordinating Design Risk Management (DRM) - Provide evidence of how the Principal Designer coordinated the DRM procedures and output of Designers during the project including ensuring consideration of Buildability, Maintainability and Usability.
  • Integrated Team Working - Provide evidence of the Principal Designer contributed to ensure integrated team working throughout the project.
  • Influence of Role Played By Client - Provide evidence of how the Client’s Management Arrangements, through the Principal Designer, have influenced the health and safety aspects of projects
  • Influence of Role Played By Client -Provide evidence of how the Client’s Management Arrangements, through the Principal Designer, have influenced the health and safety aspects of projects
  • Contribution made to overall project health and safety - Describe how the Principal Designer made a positive contribution to the project’s overall health and safety achievements.
  • Liaising with the Principal Contractor regarding construction phase design changes - Provide evidence of how the Principal Designer liaised effectively with Principal Contractor and Designers during the construction phase regarding design changes and the subsequent management of health and safety risks and hazards.
  • Verification of Performance - Provide any evidence of the Principal Designer’s overall performance.
  • Show what the Principal Designer has done with industry wide initiatives.
  • Additional Information - Provide any further information that you consider to be important to your submission.
  • Case Study provision - Please describe in 1000 words or less, the characteristics that gave you the greatest satisfaction, and had the most significant outcomes on this project and makes this project suitable to use as an exemplar case study.
