City of Milton, PierceCounty, Hylebos Creek Watershed, 5th Avenue and Porter Way.

Question 9. Site Description: (Size of project area, topography, watershed positioning, level of disturbance, existing land use):

The Preserve is a 2.5-acre parcel; student project would constitute a portion of the parcel. Current land use is a conservation easement with several small, active wetland enhancement projects in progress. The site is a flat seasonally-flooded plain (slopes <5%), in a small river valley in the middle of the watershed. Hylebos Creek is a small salmon-bearing stream that dissects the property running approximately north to south. The site is bordered on the north by a gravel pit, on the east and south by terraced residential development, and the west by low density residential and Hwy 99. The gravel pit to the north was recently sold and is slated for high density mixed-use development. Due to rapid development in the Federal Way area where the headwaters to the Creek lie, there is chronic hydrologic disturbance, with multiple 100-year flood events occurring annually.

Question 10. Project Goals & Objectives (What is to be accomplished and why):

Goal 1: Develop wetland enhancement goals for the entire site for long-range planning purposes.

Objectives:1. Determine goals for zones at site based on recent delineation.

2. Develop a timeline to implement those goals.

Goal 2: Design a small enhancement project that would correspond to one of the zones identified in the recent delineation.

We have a lot of site reference materials including historic and current aerial photographs, a topographic map, water quality data, and a wetland delineation. We have a Biological Assesment for a similar site upstream, manuals for developing monitoring strategies and the Friends of the Hylebos Wetlands recently devised vegetation monitoring program. We also have field equipment that students may borrow including Munsell color charts, soil probe, measuring tape and wheel, hip-chain, flow-probe, etc…

Question 13. Volunteer Resources (If volunteers are going to assist in aspects of the project does your organization have access to a volunteer resource pool):

We have a 6-person Earth Corps crew assist with all volunteer projects in addition to the 10-30 volunteers that usually show up.
