CASE WESTERN RESERVE REGIONAL

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

Please note that selection of students for these events is a very difficult thing in the best of times and even more difficult when our team is so young as it is this year. It was done with a great deal of time and consideration to each student’s skills, participation, commitment, and interests. Selection for the Case Teams does not automatically mean selection for State Competition. Thank you for your consideration, any questions, STUDENTS are welcome to call Dr. Clouser (286-8310 evenings) Mr. Jake Adams (478-3571), or Mr. Mike Savides (286-8272).

PARENTS: Your student has been asked to participate at the Case Western Reserve Regional Science Olympiad, as either a team member or alternate. The Competition will be held at CaseWestern ReserveUniversity on the Case Quad and affiliated buildings. This is a University campus in the middle of a not very nice neighborhood. I urge you to discuss safety with your student and to attend the competition with your student. One person cannot keep an eye on everyone. Your student should be instructed that they are NEVER for ANY REASON to leave the Case Quad. If they are not in an event, they are to return to their homeroom (TBA). THEY SHOULD NEVER GO WITH SOMEONE THEY DON’T KNOW. Try to travel together.

We will be traveling to CWRU by School Bus. The bus will meet in front of the Middle School on Saturday February 23rd at 6:20 am, and leave at 6:30 am sharp(watch for last minute departure changes based on weather & check the web site last thing Friday night). Do not just drop off your student. Please check your student onto the bus by speaking personally with Mary Savides and turning in completed paperwork. We expect to return around 6:00 pm to the Middle School. Please be where we can reach you (not your answering machine) at that time. Students are expected to travel with the team on the bus and spend the whole day at CWRU. Students may return home with parents (see below). Please call Dr.Clouser before10:30 pmFriday if you are unable to attend.

Student check list:

  • Students that have the red t-shirts should wear them. I will try to provide red t-shirts for others.

  • Assorted sodas

Other important miscellaneous thoughts

  • Students must dress warmly it may be very cold and you do have to walk between buildings on the quad
  • Anyone in a chemistry event: no open toed shoes and hair must be pulled back with hair clips. Legs completely covered, long sleeves on shirts and don’t forget goggles and aprons
  • Bring only your best behavior and attitude.
  • Remember that anyone can hear or overhear what you are saying so if it is not something nice, then don’t say it at all.
  • Remember sportsmanship and consideration of others. Help out whenever you can.

Parent check list:

  • You need to complete the provided permission slip and turn it in as you drop off your student.
  • You need check your student onto the bus.
  • You will notice that you can pick your student up at CWRUafter the awards. Parents are invited to attend the awards ceremony at CWRU which should take place sometime around3:30 at Strosacker Auditorium
  • We do need some parent volunteers:one more parent to ride on the bus with us, one or two more parents to help with check in and check out of materials and to help keep the kids orderly at CWRU. We will be in the front right of Strosaker Auditorium as you face the stage.
  • If you can, and are willing to fulfill any of these roles please call Dr. Clouser at home this evening 286-8310, Mr. Jake Adams (478-3571), or Mr. Mike Savides (286-8272)..
  • Make sure your student eats a good breakfast and gets a good night sleep and brings all necessary materials to compete!

Just in case you don’t hear me say it to you directly, I am very proud of how hard you have all worked to make our team a success this year. I can not think of any young people I would rather have representing our school.

While you are at CWRU, remember that you are team mates and that you need to work to support each other. Remember also that to get points in any event you have to participate fully in the event and not violate the spirit of friendly competition or the spirit of the rules. Any deviation (such as rudeness towards other competitors or event organizers) will result in immediate disqualification by event captains or directors. This also applies to any guests or family members you may have accompanying you at Case. Remember that if you do not have something kind to say, then say nothing at all. You never know who may be listening to your commentary. If you feel you have observed something wrong, see Dr. Anne personally before discussing it with anyone else.

Coaches, remember that coaching stops Friday night. At case do not touch building items, do not coach from the sidelines. The practice and coaching is over for today and now it is time to let students show what they have learned.
